270 Gallon SPS tank for JBNY

Here is an update.

So the last two weeks have been spent finishing the new walls to the fish room and reinforcing the floor. It took a lot longer than I thought. Originally I thought I could just bang out the room in about 3 weeks total. Right now I think it will be 6 weeks to redo that room. So here are some picture of the progress.

Finished taping and spackling.
Here is the inside of the room.

Here I am finally finished with the walls. All done attaching all the molding and painting the trim and the walls.

Outside. I gotta hand it to the ability of the paint stores to match existing paint from a chip you pull off the wall. The walls in the basement are about 15 years old and they were able to match to the existing paint perfectly.

A close up of the LCD screen I attached to the wall. :D

I also was able to reinforce the floors. I had spoken to an structural engineer when I first put up my 180 gallon tank and gave him some different weights to work with for different tank sizes. For my 270 I am technically ok. But he said that when I had a bunch of people over, like at a party or something, I might notice a little bounce in the floor. He recommended I attached some plywood on the sides of the trusses to help stiffen them up. So I did that on 4 of the trusses. So now it should be plenty strong.

All closed back up.

So now I just have to tape and spackle the ceiling, then paint the ceiling, and fix all the hanging wires. After that, I am all done and can start building the stands for the equipment for the fish room. Hopefully I can get enough work done to begin the equipment stand next week!! Then hopefully water in the tank in two weeks.

update? Joe?... everyone is anxiously waiting...

I am spackling and sanding the ceiling right now. That will take about two more days, then paint it and fix all the hanging wires you see in all the pictures. So hopefully I will be building the stand for the equipment sometime next week. All the plumbing supplies I need are on their way from savko.

Same boat here, have seen alot tanks and talked with alot of people, people always metioned JBNY's tank.

Been following this thread, and I think I am more impatient to see this thing progress than JB is. I have a 180 inwall with a 7 x10 foot "fish room" behind it, in the works. It is part of a larger basement refurb and I am afraid that my contractor will be done before I have had an opportunity to see how this system turns out.

Thanks guys, don't put any pressure on me or anything. ;)

After the tank is up, if in the future you want to do a MR tank tour I'd be up for it. But it would be a hike for some of you. Last time I did one for the LIRA club about 50 people showed up over the house. I told my wife maybe 15 would be there.

I am getting anxious to get this thing going. But reefing is an exercise in patience anyway, so as long as I am making good progress I'm happy.

Good progress is keyword. I've been working on my build for about two months now. But between the 2 jobs at the moment and sleep, I've been getting little done. But as long as it turns out as decent as I have it pictured in my head, I'll be happy to get it done in time - whatever that means. :D

by myu calculations, you have had this tank in house for three months. You have proved you have patience, now show us some pics please.

So Joe, is this an exercise in patience or procrastination? JK

Do plan on getting water in it before MACNA?:D

This is why I always say to get the tank set up first, then do the woodwork a couple of years later. ;)
