lol yeah that was me.

About 6 months in the tank, probably about 4" long?

The frag of the table coral about 2 months after I first got it.

When we pulled it out. I must have fragged 3-4" chunks out of this coral at least a dozen or so times over the years as well.

incredible growth on those corals. Do you think by using ozone in your system help ?

And I have a couple of frags of this that are now huge. In the penn state tank its got a nice green color to it.. in mine it stays mostly tan with some green mixed in.

Very fast grower, and loves to fill up space.

I saw earlier in the thread someone mention that I had starfire glass shields on my lumen arcs. Not really... you must have me confused with Mike Paletta.. a very common occurance    I have even had people come up to me to get his book signed.

I did not put the glass shield only because my relfectors are about a foot off the water, and I did not think I would need them. In retrospect, it would have been a good idea to put the glass shield. The reflector does get salt spray even that high off the water, and over time the reflectivity lost due to salt spray will easily offset the loss due to the glass shield.

Joe, tank is looking good. You are way more patient than I am. !!

sanjay.

SunnyX I am running 250 Watt MH with VHO URI actinics. The bulbs are XM10K. Right now I only have the XM10K bulbs over the tank.

To everyone else who offered kind words, thanks do much for the nice comments. I really appreciate them!!

I must be on the right track. After aqonizing for weeks over it, I have settled on 3 x 250 XM10K with luminarcs and 2 160W VHO Actinics for a 220 gallon SPS tank (72 x 30 x 24).

What lighting schedule do you intend to use once you are running the VHOs too?

The final pieces of the puzzle are finally being placed! Looking good joe! What kind of Tunze's do you have in there? Love those big corals!

I will 2nd that motion. 1 piece of glass is SOOO much easier to clean than about 16 different little aluminum sections.

The only thing that scares me, is how hot does it get inside the reflector with the glass on it? I have fans blowing on the bulbs now, wouldn't work that well with glass there.

If i were to switch to the Lumenarc reflectors, I'd get the ones with the fan kit, and exhaust the heat outside, or at least vent away.

Joe, what did you cover/paint the back with ?? I notice it is black now. The light rack slides are great. I plan on doing something similar

I think Ozone helps with clarity, which helps with light penetration. I don't know if I would contribute my grow to ozone thought. Really my biggest asset in that tank was my ability to NOT put my hands in that tank. I set up a grow out tank in the basement that I used for all frags and all introducing corals to the tank. Even new addition for the main tank were in the grow out tank for about two months before they went in the main tank upstairs. Other than fragging corals for growth, I never had my hands in that tank foe that last 2 years of having it.

Thanks Sanjay, That coral is great in that it tables and is easy to care for. Unfortunately it will easily fill up your whole aquarium if you let! :D

I've been trying to be patient, but I'm growing increasingly anxious to put things in the tank now that the lights are on.

I'll use the same as I did last time.

07:30 AM: MH turns on right to left over a period of 15 minutes to simulate sunrise, then turns off after VHO comes on.
07:45 AM: VHO ON
08:00 AM: MH OFF
12:00 PM: MH ON
08:35 PM: VHO OFF
08:40 PM: MH turns off right to left over a period of 15 minutes to simulate sunset.

just a standard background for the tank you pickup at the LFS. I've never seen the point in painting the back of the tank. It's pretty easy and cheap just to tape a solid color backup against the back glass.

They're great. ;)

Only took me a day and a half to get through all the reading on this thread...very impressive setup. :D

I must state that you have plenty of patience in getting this done. I’ll be relying on my wood working skills again this winter as I redo my bar in cherry. Hopefully it will come out as nice as your stand did…

You mention about not putting your hands in the tank...I’ve read many items about how the oils on your hands can have an effect, but do you really think it’s that destructive? You obviously have some serious coral growth, so I'm all ears on this. Problem I have is that I seem to have my hands in the tank every day (for feedings, cleaning, etc). I’m just trying to figure ways that I would be able to avoid it…

Again, awesome build....

My thoughts on having your hands in the tank are this, when you put your hands in the tank, people (at least I do) tend to move things around here and there. By doing that I think you disturb the corals a little bit. I think this effects the corals growth and health somewhat. I've always found the less I touch the corals, the better they do.

I don't think anything on your hands really effect things too much. While I had my hands out of the main tank a lot. They were in sump and frag tank a lot, and everything was connected. So I think it was hands off the corals that helped.

That is an interesting lighting schedule Joe. Thanks for typing that up.

Your welcome.

Well, I'm mostly hands off the coral...but that's not to say it hasn't been bumped with a siphon hose when cleaning the sand.

I think I need to take a look at some of your previous threads to see how things were set up before. All I can say is that I've never seen coral growth like that...so you must be doing something right ;)

JBNY - this is an awesome thread to watch. I have read all 27 pages. Great job. And you to Joey, awesome build I just looked at your thread. I wish my wife would let me do that. You are either a brave soul or she is easy going. Maybe a combo of the two.

Keep the progress coming, I am enjoying this thread!! :)

Thanks...I find if you whine long and hard enough, it usually breaks them down to the point they will let you do anything. :p That and the fact my old 90 gallon overflowed about 10 times. :(
