270 Gallon SPS tank for JBNY

Joe --

I just rediscovered this thread and it took two days (at 5 minute intervals) to catch up and take notes/bookmarks along the way. I took a lot of ideas that you shared when you visited CMAS last yearCMAS (or the year before?). Anyway, great job on all levels. I'm also about to make the move from a 55g to a 125g (build thread here , and will certainly borrow some of your ideas. An AC3 is in the plan, but I really like how you're squeezing every bit out of it.

One question, though: Are the rocks touching the bottom of the tank? I see that you put the sand in first, but I didn't see mention of getting the rocks on solid ground.

And BTW, that tank (construction and clean lines is very cool.

Something big must have come up; like a huge shipment of frags right? JK:lolspin:

Joe,

You went with the "CFA634-TMC-KU" display, correct?

Already have it working on OSX for basic sensor output, I will work with growl & other apps later today or this week to see what i can come up with in my spare time.

For anybody looking to work on OSX, here is the Virtual COM Port Drivers download that work with the CFA634 USB units.

Sorry guys, I got sidetracked in RL.

But here are the pictures of the rockwork. My lights won't be setup untill the weekend, so the lighting is not the best.

Joe,
Do you plan on keeping strictly SPS or a mixture of Stonies? You have so much room for tasty LPS goodies on the bottom :)

Here are some FTS with 96 watts of OC lighting I normally use on my refugium

So with this tank I am trying to have the rock work much more open than my last tank. With the old tank I found out a few things.

Acros grow really big. Most of my colonies when I took them out were easily 8"-10" across. they al started as little 1/2" frags but really grew large. Even with heavy fragging. So I want to make sure I have room for them to grow.

Having rock in the upper 2/3rds of the tank was a waste. The coral soon grew to the top of the tank. and really had nowhere to grow too soon. SO I am trying to keep the rock work much lower.

Leave lots of open spaces, the spaces that I left the largest gaps were the places that I liked the most in my tank, the corals grew with lots of room and the fish could swim in and out of the coral branches. So I tried to leave a bunch of horseshoe shaped open areas.

Anyway, I am building a light rack and the canopy right now. I hope to have that done in a few days.

I had hoped to have fish in the tank this weekend. but my cleanup crew didn't get here last week. I should have my snails this weekend and fish the next.

Yes that is the display I have . If I were to by another one I would get the you bought. I like mine, but the LCD contrast looks to be better on the one you have.

I will probably put some LPS at the bottom. I did that last time. This time I'll try to choose LPS that don't get too big though.

Hey Joe,

Just an FYI...Make sure you keep your sales receipts for your WavySea units. They have a one year warranty, but require your sales receipt/invoice as proof of purchase date for any warranty work.

My WavySea plus just recently quit moving after 6 months of use....Had to send it off to them for service. Just a heads up...I made the mistake of pitching my invoices after 6 months...fortunately, I was able to find one of my old email confirmations from Premium Aquatics and sent them that...

Rockwork looks great!

Nick
