29 biocube filtration

im planning on the center section for any media I may need - for now ill use the end for a chiller pump
pretty sure im going to hook mine up

If your still set on rubble rock, Seachem makes biomatrix media, which is basically rubble rock. I ran mine with a 1 litre bottle in a large media bag for months with no issues. And with it being in a media bag you can pull it out, rinse it off, and suck out the detritus that settles in the chamber.

The 1 litre size is all you need, and you can still run a media rack. The only reason I still have mine in the tank is I use it in my QT filter.

I think the basket is a smart choice. I think you will find that the media basket makes quite an improvement. The intank ones are very good quality. They are all laser cut and even come with a Swedish fish to eat.

+1 - I use matrix in my tank. Really helps keep nitrates in check.

I have been running the same tank since January. I started with all the crap. Purigen chemi pure elite weekly water changes etc... i almost gave up it was such a disaster.

I took all of it out and run my middle area with a media rack with floss on top and nothing else. I just took out about 10 pounds of live rock to get better flow. I think these small tanks really need dead zones eliminated. I run a tunze 9001 in the third chamber and a 1 inch and bed. I still do weekly water changes but really minimal filtration. I think keep it simple and with weekly water changes you really can run these really clean. The tank has never looked better. Growth on all the corals now instead die off on a regular basis.

Oh and I put dragons breath in the display.

Thanks acexotix, good to know. I'm trying keep keep it simple as well. I believe I might just be over thinking it. Lol.

Just canceled my order for the sponges. I will run filter floss with one little of matrix in a media bag and chemipure. In time I will get a skimmer if needed.

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I don't want to clutter the board with another on the same topic.

I am starting my tank the end of this week and have the InTank media rack with filter floss, Purigen, and Chemi-Pure Elite, along with the Tunze 9001 skimmer. What is advisable for the sponge between chamber two and three. do most people leave the black sponge in there, take it out and leave the space open, or replace it with something different that works better?

I left the sponge in between the middle and the third. For filtration, I only have 25lb of marco rock and a skimmer.

I change 5 gallons weekly, and so far the inhabitants are doing well, aside from the sick clown I had to remove.

I still have my balls.... but I'm removing them this week. I will also remove that sponge as well. I will put my chemipure in that spot.

The only thing with removing the sponge between the chambers is that you leave the possibility that any debris that gets into chamber two can get pulled into your return pump. I think the sponge there since it is fairly easy to clean and it lets me not have to worry about a burned out pump.

There's so much with these that can be done and trust me, I've spent hours and hours reading on things to do. I did remove the sponge between chamber 2 and 3 also. Honestly the last thing I'm going to do is change the return pump to be able to split the return but other than that I'm happy.

I'm keeping it super simple, change my filter floss every three days and water each week. My rastas have grown 4 polyps in a month, my monti cap is growing great and I put my first acro in last week and I have great PE and color so far.

When i had all of the chemicals in, i was killing things left and right.

Also, I'm running dimmable chinease leds and love it.

Thanks, I'm just starting to I'm starting slow. I rather read first and get the right sutff. I do appreciate all the advice. I'm putting filter floss, with matrix and chemipure. That will be the first mod. Then I will worry about light and flow. My coral choices for now are low light low flow anyway. I want the easier ones lol.
