290G Peninsula build...yet another Canadian reef

Yup, that's the plan. I overtightened the plumbing into my pump on my water change station and so the union cracked. I'm waiting for replacements from Reeflo and then I will mix up about 200G of salty water to get the process going. I've got to pump that over to my sump and then up from the fishroom to the Display. It's going to be interesting...especially if I have any leaks.

Well, got a little farther today and finally put a little water in the tank.

Got some water in the sump as well, preparing to send it upstairs to the display...but found some issues with my plumbing.

Also, after further testing the plumbing to my New Reeflo pump, we realized that the volute had a big crack in it. Thankfully I had a spare brand new Reeflo too, so that's getting in place now.

Here's the cracked volute...I never spotted it before I plumbed it.

So given the leak in the volute, I decided that I wasn't ever happy with the plumbing to my return pump so I redid it all.

Here's the new look. I didn't want to do those 90's but there just wasn't enough room below the pipe coming out of the wall to do it any other way while still keeping the pump straight out of the sump.

I did my very best to vibrate proof the pump with a 1" foam block under it, then a 5/8" board and then another 5/8" open cell foam block all bolted to the stand. I haven't ever fired this pump up yet, so we will see in the next few days how it works.

I've been continuing to work on the tank and today I got the APEX up and the firmware updated. This meant that I could get my light going too.
Yesterday I put in 30 ampules of Prodibio Startup and today I moved my limited (about 70 lbs or so) Liverock into the tank along with the lone Chromis that's been making it live rock for the last year.
Here are some pictures.

When I first got the lights going. This looks really blue but it's my crappy phone, not the real color. This is at about 70% and 14" above water.

And here is after I've put in my liverock. Light is down to about 25% and only 1/2 of the Blues and NW without any Royal Blues and or cool whites..

Lastly, with just moon's on. My phone made it look bright but it's not that bright at all.

There's different kind of fittings you could use to avoid those 90's at the top if your pump. I'm a pool/hot tub builder and would never put that kind if back pressure on a pump return, I would use a sweep 90 slp x skt to save space. The difference in your gpm and head pressure are remarkable, your losing a lot of flow here and, in the pool industry at least, we'd look at this as future issues with the pump as well. Overheating is the number on cause of pump failure and back pressure is the number one cause of overheating. That volute is regularly available at pool/hot tub stores if you need a replacement. As well, the main seal in that pump will wear out in time, that can also be repaired at a hot tub store cheap and fast.

Thanks for the input on the pump. I will look into those fittings. If you have a link to them that would be great! In Canada, I couldn't get 90 sweeps and so I had to order some from the US. I would be happy to do so again if it would make things better in the long run.

Closed down my other two tanks at my old house and finally did the move with my livestock. I sold all the rock and corals in my old tanks back to the LFS and will be starting new with SPS and LPS and Zoa's.
A few pictures of the fish enjoying their new digs.

Nice tank and lots of planning! For whats the bulkhead in the sump in the left side?

The bulkhead out of the sump on the left is my way of draining the sump for water changes. I can simply shut down the return, the sump fills up and then I drain the left compartment (about 45gallons) and then close the ball-valve and hit a switch and my water change bin puts 45 gallons of new saltwater in. Takes about 5 minutes total.

Sorry for the long hiatus. This have been going well with the tank. Always slow compared to how you hope it will go.

I have added some fish and quite a few frags. This will be my first SPS dominant tank and I'm learning how much flexibility I need to have to make this work.

I will let the pictures do the rest of the speaking for me. Note that I am terrible at taking pics.

Today I added this guy to the main display. I got him for a deal that could not be passed up. Normally I would have waited to add a Sohal last so that some other Tangs could go in. Hopefully I have screwed myself on this.

The yellow tang immediately started beating on him. Lights went out and hopefully they can work it out. This tank has plenty of room for both of them. Any suggestions for dealing with this?

Don't have any suggestions on the tang aggression, but what's your plan on water flow in the tank?

I see that you don't have a closed loop and was wondering how you'll be getting sufficient flow on the "far-side" of the tank (especially if you're keeping SPS).

Thanks,

Chad

Lots happening with my tank these days and very little of it is good. Against my better judgement I added that Sohal tang directly to my display...well although it was healthy and fat...it gave pick to everything. Lost a large black and white clown plus my flame angel by the next day....then the sohal started looking rough. I moved him to quarantine and he passed. The my two truepercs went. Now my big yellow is struggling...hoping he makes it.
Read of this kind of mistake over and over...but thought I would never make it myself.

On your question of flow...the two 6105's and the 6205 all have to be turned way down otherwise the flow at the far side overwhelmed the corals there...don't see a problem for now.
