3 Clams for $2200.00 They need a home people!

eastcoastzigzag,

Its the combination of the color and the pattern that makes then expensive. Blue Squamosas are rare colored clams. Most squamosas that we see are either brown with a hint of green or brown with a blue edge or a combination of the three. Squamosas that are that blue in color are rarely imported, that's why the price tag is so high. They are now being farm raised in Bali but they are having trouble importing them due to no CITES on them. Hope this clears things up a bit.

Hey Capt. Pete,

I was just at the CV Dinat clam farm a few months ago. LOTS of blue squamosas. But the guy told me they were selling those at high prices to European wholesalers. In fact, I tried to hook them up with Barry Neigut (ClamsDirect) and they weren't even interested. Tried to e-mail them a couple more times since I got home to see if they'd change their minnd - they don't reply. Oh yeah, they are raising porcellanus, too, which is what I actually wanted for myself more than a blue squa...

One more thing - the facility manager told me they were getting about 10% blues from every batch of squamies produced. So, if he's not lying then blues aren't rare there - just rare here.

critterkeeper,

Thanks for the info. Let me know if they reply as I would be interested in both the blue squamosa and the porellanus.

you know what, would never pay a grand for any coral or clam, my ego just isn't big enough...they can have it. I hope they're for real and not dyed, you never know nowadays with science and technology. I would imagine that if these are natural they would appear more frquently and if rare they should be popping up this frequently at 4 to 6 inches.

Any info on these guys? Where are they from? why the heavy blue tones?

the sad thing is with people willing to pay such prices we all get priced out of this hobby.

Wait a year and when these start to show up in numbers in the US, watch the price come down. Just like the colored teardrops maximas. When they first started coming in, they sold any where from 190.00-599.00 and now you can get them from 99.00 - 129.00. And they gold ones were 100.00 plus now you can give them away. It's all about supply and demand.
