3 heads dead but growing 1 new

I bought this hammer three months ago. It was doing well. Within one month three heads died. But sprouted a new one. The last established head fell off within the last week. The newly growing one seems to be in good condition. How can I be losing four established heads, but be growing a new?

Possibly balance of the piece, or lighting, or flow/food supply. A colony will take a shape it 'likes' and overgrow the old configuration. Don't touch it. Let it do its thing. When it grows it will reshape itself into a ball.

When you say "balance", do you mean that in a physical sense? Or the sense of balance with the traits of the new ecosystem?

Happy to say that the Hammer has 5 new heads starting! I left it alone and now is doing great!
