3 New Mags and a prayer! They look bad...

Seems like you are doing everything you need to be.

On a side note, I am always so curious how they permit the sale of Rx medication by stating it is for animal use.

Well, I don't have good news. I made a bad mistake that might kill this Mag in the long run.

The 3 mags in qt secreted so much mucus, that it stopped my pump and they were without flow all night long AGAIN. My other pump was running as a backup (Aquaclear) and I had the egg-crate guard out of tank when I did a WC and forgot to put it back to keep the Nems away from the heater and filter. So my Aquaclear sucked one up (I had the bottom pipe off too, so he was sucked half way down the tube) in it which stopped the second pump. It was a bad situation and my water was super cloudy. I don't know when it happened or how long it was, but it could have been 1-16 hrs. Either way, it seemed like a long time because the water was so cloudy. It might cost me the life of the Nem that was doing the worst. He is by far the worst I've ever treated and was starting to make just a slight improvement until that happened. If he dies, it's all my fault. Currently they're all still alive. The worst one was barely hanging on when I left for work. He is so bad, that he's actually loosing tentacles and almost melting. He's still moving though. If he pulls through, it will be from my prayers and nothing I have done. It's gonna take a miracle. I started with 250mg of Cipro and went to 500mg. I think I'm going back to 250mg again and also start running Amoxicillin at 250mg to see if he responds better to the other medication while still keeping Cipro going. Talked to a few nurses and a doctor about it tonight.

I hate to even post this, but I want you guys to see how bad the worst one is. :-(

Update:

I put all three in a slightly bigger tank. Running two aquaclears and powerhead (3 pumps) for failsafe. Just incase they release a ton of mucus again, I know at least one of the three pumps will keep running. Currently reduced Cipro back to 250mg and added Amoxicillin 250mg. The next day I bumped the Amoxicillin up to 500mg. After that, the worst mag seen to start responding. Now I have them back with both meds at 250mg.

Here's a few pics, it's been a battle:

The worst one

Starting to respond to the antibiotic therapy

My recent gig headed into my powerhead during QT, so I decided to just keep running an airstone to eliminate the possibility of it getting sucked back in.

Good luck! It looks like you are doing a great job.

Thanks, just did 75% WC and dosed 250mg Cipro and 250mg Amoxcillin.

I put them in bigger tank and added more pumps for failsafes. I have Aquaclear 30 & 20 running. Also a HKE 750 in back with them, and up front I have the super tiny Eheim compact 300 that you can barely see in this picture with a mag float under it to prevent anybody getting sucked into it. They're loving all the flow and the tank is staying clean. It's difficult to take care of 3 sick mags at one time, but it saves on the medication and WC's. I would do it again. I couldn't add a lot of flow in the beginning because they were so sick that they couldn't keep attached to the bottom glass. They was just way too weak.

Update:

He's all bleached out and was so bad he has literally had tentacles melt off, break, or fall off, but the antibiotics have taken control over the infection and hopefully with good light, flow, and some food real soon- he'll be able to survive and get his color back.

I wonder how long It will take before he's ready to eat? I'm thinking 3-4 more days or so.

That is insane. I have never seen a nem look that bad and come back. Ever. Good job. I have been reluctant to jump on the medication train, but you just convinced me. Assuming that in the future I decide to get some friends for my mag, I will have a bottle of cipro sitting ready.

Thanks for the kind words!

Wow.. this is very cool. Mags have a way of looking TERRIBLE and then miraculously turning around in treatment. I never recommend treating more than one nem in the same QT tank, so I'm glad it's working out.

I agree with Orion not to feed it for a while, even if it looks bleached. Mags will literally eat themselves, and if you see this happening (the mag will look like parts of its tentacles or a portion of the oral disc is missing) it's could be an indicator that the nem is able to eat. My hypothesis is that sick nems can only do one thing at a time -- focus their energy on recovery, excrete waste, or eat - in that order of priority.

This is great and you are great.. I wish everyone in the reef hobby/trade would care this much about the organisms. Your care and dedication reflects in the greatly increased condition of the nems! I hope it keeps going well with no inconveniences

Wow! Amazing! Now do you have a trick to get the bleached one to color up? Or just wait and hope for the best?

Menace

No color up tricks sadly. I think food, sufficient light, and time will eventually color him back to normal.

I will say this as you mentioned a trick. I feel this really helped him and made the difference of pulling him through. I took a very small power head (Eheim compact 300) and directed some light flow into it's mouth to inflate him daily to get the antibiotic rich water and just new water in general into his body. It really seemed to help him. This is just my Opinion based on my personal experience without fact.

Good info D-Nak, that is interesting. Didn't realize they would go to that extent.
