30 gallon reboot

So you're sticking with the LEDs?
No I've got the ATI Powermodule hung on my 30 gallon now. I have a nest of cords behind the tank so I'm going to organize that in the next week and get everything going fully.

On my 60 gallon I still have a Radion G3 going. I don't plan to swap that out any time soon.

Hey Tim, yes, I'm slow sometimes..
Following.
Looking forward to watching the reboot.
So, ultimately you plan to use the same products on both tanks?

Hey Matt thanks for checking in! The goal will be pretty much full blown aquaforest on both tanks. I may not use their component system and I doubt I'll use the Zeolite/Carbon/Phos Minus reactor setup...but you know how quickly ideas can change.

Right now on the 30 gallon I'm using the Probiotic Reef Salt, Pro bio S, and -NP Pro. No coral yet but once I get some test frags going I will expand dosing.

On the 60 gallon I've switched over to Probiotic Reef Salt, Pro Bio S, -NP Pro and have recently been dosing Coral A,B,E,V and Micro E. It looks like the system in general has been helping with the cyano. I think getting the Matrix in there will be helpful also but it's too early to tell.

I just upgraded my RO unit today to hopefully wipe out any possibility of chloramines getting through on my 60 gallon. I went with a 20BB Housing and Chloraguard carbon block from Buckeye Hydro...pretty much brought a canon to a gun fight. My 30 gallon is in a different location so it doesn't have the issue but that RO unit burns through DI resin extremely quick. Every water source has its issues lol.

Keep updating us on that filter. I read about it recently and am interested in the product.

Is it a pre-filter, meaning before the RO membrane?

Hi Chris,
So one thing on my list of to dos is to buy a chlorine/chloramine test kit so I can measure the water. I've kind of had an ignorance is bliss attitude because of how beastly this carbon block is but I know at some point I will need to test so that I know when to replace it (I'm hoping it will last me 6 months at least!).

It is a prefilter before the RO membrane. I ended up taking apart my BRS RO unit and I plumbed it between my sediment filter (stage 1) and my first carbon block (stage 2). So essentially it is a giant carbon block before my other two carbon blocks (which essentially will provide backup).

It was somewhat expensive but gives me the peace of mind with not having to deal with chloramines (as long as I am testing and replacing as needed).

I've been battling high nitrates in my 60 gallon tank and it's one of many measure I've been doing to try to fix the cause(s).

Unfortunately I will be unable to hang from the ceiling on this tank so I'm going to have to go the conduit route. My current support made from wood just won't hold the weight.

Got another project out of the way today. Made these containers for dosing 2 part for my 60 gallon and if they work well I will make some for the 30 gallon. I will also make a couple more for dosing the NP Pro in each tank. I thought they turned out well.

Love those. How did you make the lids?

Quick update:

- On the 30 gallon I've been sitting pretty at about 1ppm Nitrate. I stopped carbon dosing -NP Pro because my protein skimmer wasn't pulling good skimmate (tank size/bioload were too small). I ended up installing a Tunze 9004 skimmer instead about a week ago. It still skims very wet but appears to be an improvement. With my bioload I don't expect much anyway. I am still unnecessarily using the Aquaforest Probiotic reef salt because I have it on hand. I may switch to their Reef Salt when I run out of this bucket as I don't think I will need to carbon dose anytime soon.

- I think I'm finally ready to start adding some frags to the 30 gallon so hopefully I can source a few starters.

- On my 60 gallon I've been trying to get nitrates back in line by doing big water changes, removing my sand bed, and increasing my -NP Pro dosage (up to 13mL/day now). I've removed half of my sand bed already and will likely get the rest out this weekend. I will replace it and have thought about going with Tropic Eden Reefflakes (comments are more than welcome on this). I test nitrates last weekend and they were between 8 and 10ppm on a Salifert test kit. Hopefully they are stable when I test this weekend!

Finally got some frags going in this tank a couple of weeks ago. Got a small pack from Adam at Battlecorals and things are settling in nicely. One of them wasn't doing as well and has experienced some STN. I dosed Coral E and A for the first time yesterday and finally got some polyps to come out on it so hopefully it can turn around on me. That is the only coral I didn't get a picture of. Don't mind the detritus/reef chili debris ;)

Tim, have you gotten those new frags mounted yet?
Hey Matt thanks for checking in. My plans have changed for the short term in this tank so I'm planning on growing out all the frags a little (frag tank style) before adding my rock and mounting. I've been relying on the Siporax which has been doing a fine job. Doesn't make the tank too much to look at yet but I know the end result will be nice.

Pretty much finished a much needed project on my 60 gallon last weekend by making this electrical board. Not super clean but a huge improvement over the previous nest of cords. Sadly, this took a couple of hours to do.

That's a damn fine board, Tim!
How's the system, in general?
Thanks Matt! Honestly it's one of the best things I've done and I wish I would've gotten to it sooner. The board is mostly behind a sofa/chair so it really cleans the place up.

The 60 gallon is doing great but I've kind of been in a holding pattern on it. I have 2Ls of Siporax on the way from Germany so I'll be excited to see if that makes any impact on the system (currently have about a gallon SeaChem matrix as well). Nitrates are still higher but things look great otherwise. I've been getting the itch to place a coral order so hopefully I will have some decent updates coming along.

Busted out the camera today but of course not before cleaning the glass :hmm2:

Nice electronic board Tim! I love it, great job, very clean and thorough :) I love the file fish too, great job on the re-boot man :)
