300gal. DD build

Update: I have done very little but have finally finished my classes online. BSIT done! Now I will have more time to work on the 300gal!

I've been researching stand designs and am not sure if I should go with all 2X4's for this stand or something heavier. Any thoughts?

This is a good video but still not sure about materials.

Congrats on finishing school.
On the stand, the size of the members depends on the design, e.g.,if you are going to have vertical supports in the middle of your span, etc. I agree with Deere on leaning towards higher safety factor than a lower one. For our 300, we went with double 2x6 beams and other very beefy members. You can see the details in our build thread page 15.

im almost finished my stand for my 210 doubled 2x6 top and bottom frame double 2x6 legs on 4 corners 3/4 plywood over frame. in process of skinning it with red oak. i would also like to add that this thing is probably heavier than the tank (unfilled of course) so just be sure of what you want before you build it.

in the middle if my build i framed in 4 holes, 2 on each side for insertion of carry handles for easier carry. i plan on making plugs for holes when not in use. i'll see about getting pictures tomorrow if anyones interested

Thanks everyone. I've done a lot of research and most of you here agree that 2X6's are the way to go in my case. The pictures and links are greatly appreciated. I want to do this right.

I bought an old industrial Miter saw that will be better than the circular saw as well. Now to make a list and head to HD!

More pics soon.

What about using iron for the stand? The peices will be smaller and stronger. If you know a welder then it might be a good idea.
Most lumber has a bow to it. I would rip it thru a tables as to true the edges. Like one of the other posters said about taking it down to 7.25".
I have the ecotech radion led on my solana and the color and growth is amazing. If you can afford them get em.
I will be following along. Looks like a sweet build.

An iron stand would be great but I guess I have my heart set on using wood. Thank you for the tips on making a wood stand better. I can't wait to get some LED lights - hopefully they will come down in price.

I am in Ashtabula....the land of nothing. lol

Got wood! :o

Lots of activity to report! Started assembling my stand on wed and made good progress. Then, I fell asleep on the couch. lol I awoke thursday morning to the sound of dripping water. Not good. To my dismay, my current reef tank, a 150gal. tall was leaking. I spent 7 hours transporting fish, corals, and LR to different tanks and Rubbermaid totes. I then cleaned up the carpet that was soaked. I went to work and came home that night exhausted. Today, my friend and I finished the frame of the stand! I will stain/seal it and put a bottom in it soon then I'll be ready for the moving crew! Can't wait to see the tank on the new stand!

Stand almost complete. This thing is heavy duty! (40" tall!)

Looking good! I really like the taller stands as well. The stand in my new build is 42". The only problem is reaching all areas of the tank without a step stool and I'm 6'-5".
The raised height viewing is worth it though IMO.
