37 Oceanic ReefPack 500 Pics

Herbie

Yep,that one
O.K. since there has been some interest lately, of ReefPack's in small tanks.........I finally got around to post some pictures.
Tank has been set-up since February, 2006. Its only about 6 months old to date.
The tank.......37 Oceanic, Oceanic stand, custom hood (It took me about a day and $80. worth of oak to build it). Black backround........1/8 lucite bonded to the outside/back of tank.
Filtration ........Tunze ReefPack 500 with 2 6080.500 magnet holders. BUT the skimmer has been upgraded to a 9010. 9005 is standard with the 500. Best filtration system I have ever used. I like to call it a ReefPack1000 now!
Approx 80lbs of Live rock. Its a lot for a 37, but I still like the "old school" look of the rock wall. Plus it hides the ReefPack nicely.
Lighting.......1 150w DE halide "pheonix 14k" plus 300w VHO actinic = 450W !!! Corals are THRIVING with this lighting!
Top-off........Tunze Osmolator.....Included with the Reefpack 500, With the addition of the Tunze 5074 calcium/kalk dispenser. Best top-off system I have ever used.
Heater........1 black steath 100w. Cant even see it!
O.K. now for some pictures.........not the greatest quality, but it will give an idea of how a ReefPack 500 looks and fits in a small tank.

Picture 3 .........Top view..........note: remember, this is now a 9010 skimmer.........a 9005 cup is about half as high as the 9010 in the picture

This is BY FAR the best set-up I have ever used to date! It is so simple and trouble free. Maintanance is very easy. Top-off is automatic. It has really cleaned my tank up quite a bit. The water clarity is much better than I am used to.......and nuisence algea is is becoming extinct! The best "pro" to using the ReefPack 500 system is , I have no worrys of something going haywire........no floods, no adjustments.........nothing. I love not having a sump now! Its so easy. With this sytem I really dont see the need for a sump anymore.........its just simply........not worth the trouble!

Thanks to Roger Vitko from Tunze U.S.A. for all his help, cust. support and answering all my Tunze questions ! Also thumbs up to Brian at Fins Reef for top notch service and cust. support.

Let me know what you think!

Looks good. I would suggest installing the Calcium Dispenser in the reservoir though. The hoses get brittle in time and tend to pop off.

Very nice setup Herbie, I have decided to get the nano 200 and then the osmolator. I do appreciate you getting the pics up. As soon as my tank start to develope I will post some.
Thanks again
Luis

Very nice setup Herbie  and thanks for sharing the pics. Right now I'm in the process of setting up a very similar 30g cube with a Reefpack 500 (equipment already on hand) so this thread was great to see.

Oh, wanted to say I second what Roger had mentioned earlier... put the calcium dispenser in the bucket because it will eventually leak or one of those hoses could come loose. In two years using one I had it happen to me twice so good thing it was mounted inside the bucket or my floor would have been ruined.

Sweet canopy. Very nice work. Is that DE/Mh sheilded by any kinda of U.V glass? And if not have you had any kind of problems? Curt

Curt..........Thanks.
I only used the MH for a short time. Its no longer on the tank. I ran it without the u.v. glass VERY carefully. I started with only one hr a day, and increased it slowly to 4-6 hrs a day with no problems. Corals were happy, and suffered no ill effects.
Unfortunatally, it was overheating my tank too much and I had to remove it from the hood. I am now running the VHO's only. The corals seem to doing just as good, but I do miss the "glitter" lines! The MH Retro is for sale btw.
Thanks.........Herbie

I am looking for an alternitive to a sump since my tank is not predrilled and i live in apartment and am concerned with an overflow box loosing suction and causing a flood. I was wondering if you could give an explination on what functions the reefpack 5oo performs as well as the potential for a flood if something goes wrong. I tried looking it up on the tunze site however i still had questions such as how is the flow created? do I need a retrurn pump or is one included? What is needed to hook up the Tunze 5074 calcium/kalk dispenser to the system. Is this a type of reactor or just a dispenser? If just a dispenser am I correct in thinking that it will dispense liquid product of my choice. Sorry for so many questions i am just exited to think i may have other options to maintain my water and add a slight increase in volume other than a typical sump.

It is a skimmer and filter, it comes equipped as a mechanical filter but optional cartridges allow the use of carbon and other medias. It includes the Osmolator auto-topoff system. It mounts in tank and all pumps are included. The calcium dispenser is a simplifeid Nilsen Reactor, you fill it with kalk powder and it doses kalkwasser.

Skimmer01,
Sorry I must have missed your question. Looks like Roger has it covered! I will just put in my 2 cents.
The ReefPack 500 is the best system I have ever used. It is a hang "in" tank system, that taks up no more room than a "built in overflow" on a "reef ready" tank. About the same size as a hang on tank overflow. Since its in tank mounted, there is no way it can overflow your tank. Great for apartments!
Its a very efficient 3166 filtration module that you can choose between running mechanical or chemical media, with a surface skimming feature. Includes a VERY strong pump........over 400gph. Also has tabs in the filter box for the osmolator top off.
Its hooked up with a 9005 skimmer.........kicks butt. Runs silently, with almost no fuss or overflowing hazards. Set it and forget it!
Also comes with an auto top off sytem .......Osmolator, with a 7 gallon reservoir/bucket. It uses a optical sensor to keep the water level EXACT.........no joke! If I take out a few oz. of tank water to mix fish food with........the Osmo will kick on and refill it! It also has some safety features built in to prevent the tank from overflowing or the pump running dry, including a "high water" float/alarm. Its the best !!!!
The Kalk dispensor is hooked up through the osmo plumbing. Instead of the Osmo replacing just fresh top off water, it runs through the 5074 Kalk dispensor and mixes it by way of a water jet from the osmo, at the bottom of the 5074. The outlet is at the top, that goes up to the tank. Pure simplicity and it works.
You CANT mix any other liquid additives.......ONLY kalk.
I also use the magnetic holders for mine, so I have NO brackets holding this onto the back of the tank........Simple!
With this sytem........I see no need to run a sump anymore. Its that good! It also runs near silent, and only draws about 24w for the whole set-up!
If you have any more questions.........just ask!
How did I do Roger ??? Can you tell I am more than happy with mine!
Thanks for the kudos guys !!!

You said that instead of a 9005 skimmer, it's a 9010? How did you do that? Is that an option? Can this system be installed into a 20L setup (I would only do that temporarily and then move it to my 37 gallon system (Then sell my bak pak! :) )

It's an expensive upgrade of the pump, you would be better off buying a 9010, 3166, and Osmolator separately.
