375-500G Projected Build - need some input

So I have a 275G tote sitting outside which I'm going to end up throwing out, because unfortunately with the amount of heat here in S Florida by the time I'm ready to put that water in the tank the temperature in that water has reached 82 degrees, while my tank is at 79, so not happening.

Instead, went with 2 Home Depot Dewalt heavy duty 63 gallon toolboxes, which went not in use stack up pretty nice and I can keep all my water changing and sand bed cleaning gear in there, plus water else I want really.

This is how I do either my 10% or 20% water change, depending on the need, which today is too early to tell as stocking is still extremely low.

Would be interested in how those hold up. I was originally looking at those to place in my pickup truck bed to collect NSW in Monterey and truck back to Sacramento. I ended up finding some 55 gallons that will work and just use a pump to transfer.

I liked the idea of wheels but was concerned about the load capacity. Especially since I'm going to truck 100 or so gallons.

I top them off to the very top and they hold up great, not too much bowing and then can seal with the hinges for transport and its solid. Lifting and moving that much water is another story but if you're keeping it still it's fine. I've moved it with half the water in it, which is not fun given the weight.

I'll take a pic next time I do a water change so you can see what it looks like.

My makeshift waste collector broke, plastic was too hard and cracked along the bulkhead as I picked it up, was afraid that might happen. Going to have to build another one using softer material - Walmart run tomorrow...

Cleaning filter socks sucks!
I'm having to clean them the next day, maybe 2 days tops.

Gotcha.
I read about this when I was designing my tank but wasn't sold on the design and don't know anyone that has used it, and at the time was metric fittings. Seems like a PIA to plumb given its size.

Guess I'll have to stick with felt socks for now [emoji35][emoji20]

Can you wash the socks in a washer? I used to use Filter floss back in the day but I belive it becomes a nutrient sink if not changed often. I would be a little apprehensive about the rollermat as well. Especially needing 2-3 units. Lots of sump space but definitely a great idea that will the future of reefkeeping.

Yeah, I throw them in a washing machine after I have a set of 4 or 6 ready to wash, otherwise my water and electric bill would go through the roof if I have to wash once a day. So I pile them up in a 5G bucket in the garage after I've hand washed the crud out.

Switch to mesh. They are far easier to clean and you can get the same micron size. I have developed a sock holder of sorts that will actually make the socks more efficient while also trapping any detritus that gets through the sock. PM me if you want to discuss. I plan to make a DIY thread for it one of these days but I gotta find a block of time to actually write it up.

Problem with mesh is it doesn't capture the real small stuff. I don't have chunk issues, my socks are full of fish poop [emoji90]

No food chunks make it to the socks so using mesh would make mush of it seep through and although I have a good skimmer not everything would hit the skimmer.

I'll see about feeding less, maybe one cube instead of two, or dose the food in some pepto [emoji6]

Early on plumbing boo boo worked out in keeping the wife happy by providing her with a custom Vasé (it just sounds better) centerpiece for our breakfast area.

So I just replaced all the Sodalime in my co2 scrubber which took me 10min because I got sidetracked. In that 10min my ph went from 8.0 to 7.92 while the skimmer was sucking inside co2 polluted air.

Pretty amazing and shocking.

Maybe that's why I took a nap earlier, yeah, that's it.
