4 missing Chromis OVERNIGHT???

We have 5 cats. However, they are lazy and don't look for food. The CBS just shed so he's in hiding. We found ONE peppermint shrimp but still no sign anywhere of the chromis or remains. All other fish are healthy and thriving.

I'm guessing the CBS. We had one at a LFS that I work at part-time, and it ate 4 baby blue-line triggers over a 2 day period. I told them not to put those little fish in there. LOL...

Still no remains and there are no dead chromis sticking to the decorator crab... This is the darndest thing I've ever (not) seen.

It's going to sound like a pain, but I would definitely remove the CBS to start. I had one eat 6 of my chromis, 3 a night. It nearly tripled in size. I really liked it until it ate 30 dollars of fish.
Just take the CBS out and buy a few more chromis. If they disappear too then you know to look for something else like a mantis or gorilla crab.

Boy, would have to be a pretty big coral-banded shrimp to eat even one green chromis - pet alone 4 in one night. I'd be looking elsewhere for the cause.

You don't have any ball anemones lurking in your rocks do you?

The CBS hasn't gotten any bigger, he's only about 1.5 to 2 inches from tip to tail and barely 1/3 inch across, he's quite small. Everyone seems to keep coming back to the CBS but I honestly can't see him getting ONE down, much less 4 in one night. How big is your CBS? We have no Mantis and have never heard of a gorilla :( Of course now I must go look it up.

We have no anemones at all. We bypassed them because of the stinging they do, as well as fish eating and went with frowspawn. Gave us the same effect :) The only anemones we DO have is the stray 1/4 inch majano, which we eradicate immediately.

not the CBS IMO. I have two in my 300 gallon tank and they're model citizens. I also have nine chromis and none of them have fallen victim to the CBS ;)

I would look at the disease that commonly afflicts most Blue Green Chromis lately. Snorvich on the new to the hobby forum talks about it alot. I imagine this could wipe out your chromis rather quickly. That or you have one really mean chromis that murdered them all. Either way, they're not big and a proper CUC will be able to "clean" all of the evidence in any event...

I really feel your pain. I had a starry blenny that was nearly 5" lomg fat and healthy. Ate like a champ and extremely active. Lights went out and poof, the starry blenny disappeared. I noticed he didnt come to feed the next morning so i immediately searched every inch of the floor, overflows, filter sock, sump, even took some of the plumbing apart to no avail. Well 8 days later and still no starry blenny. The two BTA I have are 2" and less than 1", so no chance there. No shrimp or crabs at all in the tank and the next biggest fish is a 4" yellow tang that would rather chase his reflection all day than eat a 5" starry blenny. Im sorry about your losses and I hope you come to a proper conclusion because i know it drives me CRAZY, absolutely bat $hit crazy for a perfectly healthy fish to vanish into thin air (or water in our case). Good luck!!

Fish are hard enough to catch; doubt its the cat; if you haven't spent as much time aquascaping your rock; you could always move them around to see if you can find the bodies.

Greg... that's it exactly. I mean I hate that I lost them but not knowing what happened or where they are at is so much worse, mostly because if I know how and what happened I could possibly avoid it from happening ever again.

cy93... The husband has spend endless hours getting these rocks placed and locked in and I'm pretty sure he has no intention of moving any of them unless a fish is in danger, trapped or some other such emergency to save them.

Beefy... If you knew these cats you'd understand. On the off chance if they DID find the fish out of the tank, they'd play with it and I'd have found it laying somewhere else in the house. The two times we found a mouse in the house were mere toys to them. They'd chase it, catch it, play with it and torture it, then get bored and leave it laying there. Also, we lost a Diamond Goby 2 weeks ago (suicide jump out of the tank) and it laid on the floor for 7 hours behind the tank before we found it and they never bothered with it.

agree, no cbs can eat 4 in one seating without leaving some evidence behind....
your cat get certified recently?
