4 mp60s too much?

I am thinking of getting two more mp60s for my tank to get more consistent flow across all levels and make for better surging. My tank is a 450g, 8'x3'x2.5'. Technically the internal dimensions make it a 375g in the main body of tank.

Mp60s range from 3750-7500gph, making for 10-20x turnover flow each. So 4 would give me a minimum of 40x and max of 80x.

For a sps dominated tank is the 40x too high for a minimum? I would likely rarely go up to the 80x mark but I assume that is ok in a tank with my dimensions.

Another option would be to add a few mp40s instead where i could manage flow much better. But having 4 mp60s would help with surging much better.

Thoughts?

I don't think 4 would be too much flow for SPS corals. Especially if they are placed properly and synced to each other, so they aren't all on at the same time. The only concern that comes to mind for me is blowing around sand.

Vortech has a flow calculator on their website, not sure how much you would trust it, but enter your tank dimensions, how many vortechs/what size, and it shows you the min-max flow rates for your selected pumps, what they feel is the recommended flow rate for SPS and LPS, and the optimal flow rate for your pumps. Just a tool to kind of give you an idea.

With my mixed reef 120 I ran over 100x min turnover and it wasn't too much for the LPS if I positioned them carefully. I would have run even more flow if the tank was SPS only.

So I think you should be fine! But I do love lots of flow...

Thanks all. I will pick up another pair of them.

I have no sand intentionally for the sand storm reason. I did originally with just 2 mp60's and it was a constant mess.

Mp40s require kits with little plastic bearings that wear out and make the MP40s extremely loud. It's a hassle and time to replace them IMO. I only purchase MP60s because of this. Go with the 60s

I have MP40's and even MP20's, I'm not familiar w/ this kit and bearings you are talking about?
I have a new MP40QD and this thing is just dead silent, however on this big of a tank I'd most likely go 60's as well just for the needed flow and less pumps

Do you have MP40 Quietdrives? Curious if you are referring to their sound or the older gen's.

i had heard people complaining a lot about mp60 noise in the past, but I have had 2 of those for several years now and never complained about them. i had always thought the mp40s were much quieter even before the quiet drive release..
