40 Breeder FTS Thread

Here's mine - I just tore down my 90 (well nearly), and crammed most things into here. Guess in general we were a little understocked in both tanks.

Nice tank Linina. You need some color in your tank but I love that midas blenny.

Great looking tanks Mordoff and Linina!! Linina- your Duncans look very happy.

Yeah, reef211 it's a load of light but it works great and my growth rates and colors are good. The downside is I have some crazy evaporation rates.

Greech I love the aquascaping in your set up!

Mordoff, beautiful tank, looks amazing for only being up three months. Can't wait to see what it looks like in the future.

Much appreciated! I have a question that may have been asked already but how often does everyone do water changes and what is the volume each time? My tank is sumpless and skimmerless and I was doing 5 gallons weekly before I emptied the tank and moved it on to the new stand. I did the first 10-gallon WC the tank has ever had that day and now it looks better than it ever has. Not sure if that because the lower scape is allowing better flow throughout or if maybe I should consider doing larger WCs or possibly alternate between 5 and 10 gallon changes each week?

I use a 20H for my sump with about 16g of water in it plus my tank volume, my two phosban 150s, the overflow and whatever amount of water that goes through the chiller etc makes my total volume just over 60g. I do a five gallon water change each week, change carbon every two weeks (BRS ROX carbon), change GFO each month, and run a Vertex IN100 skimmer. If I didn't have the skimmer I have I would move toward a 10 or 15g change each week.

Well, bad news. Hair algae is popping up in my tank. I really need to take care of it before it gets out of hand.

Hey guys,

I have a 250 watts DE pendant with icecap ballast with a 20k bulb laying around and i was think about using it on my tank. If i decided to mount it on the rack the light will be around 6" from the water. I just afraid of the heat issue, what do you guys think and will it be enough coverage?

Thought Id bump this up with an updated shot of my tank. the left side (sps side) still needs some more growing out, but its coming along nicely.

Heres an FTS from a couple weeks ago. Taken on my phone camera so its not very good but I changed the rocks around and some of the corals. I just have a problem with some of the zoanthids not growing at all and some of the sps at the top bleaching, any help with this?

How is the potters doing with the zoas and rics?

Hasn't looked twice at zoas or rics. He went for the bubble one day and took down 1/3 of it before I got home, but I upped my feeding amount and he's been fine ever since. The occasional nip on the clam, but more of a test here and there, not really picking on it seriously. He's one of my favorite fish for sure.

I just upgraded my T5 lighting to MH. 250 watt LumenMax III DE with a EVC 20K bulb powered by icecap. I really like the color of the 20k and there is no heat issue, i guess that walmart fan is working after all. :)

Here's mine. I set it up about 2 weeks ago with stock from my 33g cube that's now empty in the garage.

It's lit by 4x 24" T5s right now. I plan to add a pair of 36" bulbs, and maybe change 2 of the 24" to 36"

Love to see some updated shots of peoples growth so we can all keep track together in here. Its been a few months since this thread was started so if we all keep posting updates every few months, we should have some great documentation of the 40breeder's club over through the ages.
