40 Breeder FTS Thread

Just from my tank- when the halides go off I'm looking at the 3 39w ATI Blue+s and one 39w Fiji and it looks dark. Granted my eyes are used to the intensity of the 4 T5s plus the 2 halides I still think that 6 bulbs for SPS would be a minimum and if I could I would run eight. To be clear all
eight would be on for just a portion of the photoperiod just like my halides only run for 6 hrs.

I think that it is a little over kill. They can take it and probably grow really well, but I run a 4 bulb t5 over my tank and get very good growth and really nice color from all my sps. Some of the aro's are near the bottom and show no problems with the light. They can take a lot more, but they don't necessarily need a lot more.

this discussion is helping me alot... i was thinken i dont need anything more than a 4 bulb for my 40g breeder as well... seems like it would work quite well from what ive read...

:D

Picked up a Nova Extreme Pro fixture today so I took some new pics.

I went with the following bulb combo:

* Front
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Aquablue Special
ATI Blue Plus
KZ Fiji Purple
ATI Blue Plus
ATI Blue Plus
* Back

There was just enough room inside the fixture between the front and the reflector to mount a couple of R2 LED strips for moonlights. LED cord goes out the back with the others so it looks like it came with the moonlights stock! Man are those things bright too!

Colors look washed out in the pics, but in person this thing pops colors like crazy!

As soon as I can get that damn lawnmower blenny out my clams can go back in...

what do the aquablue specials do differently than the aquablue plus? any idea? and does the purple fiji bulb make it a darker tone of light?

Aquablue Special is like a 12k daylight bulb, while the Blue Plus is a 22k 460nm blue type.

Fiji Purple is a daylight bulb with a pinkish-purple tint to it. Really pops colors well IMO.

Love the tank roushracer. I just got new bulbs this past week too. I only have a 4 bulb setup but I went with

blue plus
fiji purple
blue plus
blue plus

and I love the colors Im getting from them and the overall blueness of the tank.

do you have a pic of your new bulbs and how they look over your tank?

i like less blue, so what would work best for me? i plan on using a 6 bulb fixture... are 12k daytime bulbs like the special more white light?

Yup, that's the bulb combo I ran before on a 4 bulb Tek. Nice 2Ok look with lots of pop.

I have some pictures I took quickly yesterday. Nothing too good. Its hard to get the right blue in the picture but its a little lighter than the picture in person. Ill also include a picture of my new mini carpet anemone I got yesterday.

On my line up before I had

blue plus
uvl super actinic
ge 6500k
blue plus

and it gave me a nice white look during the daylight and a deep blue look during actinics.

Roushracer- love the look of the six tubes! Yep, 8 might be a bit over the top but 6 looks fantastic!

Hey roush, its cool to see the powder blue tang in your tank. Hows it been doing? How long have you had it? Ive already tried a sailfin and a yellow tang but couldnt keep them alive so I just gave up with tangs lol.

Only a few days. I snatched him up for just $29.99 so i couldn't pass it up.

My custom 150g will be up by next week and I'll be shutting down the 40g breeder and Solana and everything will be going in there.

Hey guys, I'm setting up 40 breeder now and wants to drill bottom for drain/return
and what size of bulkhead u guys went with ur setup?
Thinking 1inch for drain, 3/4inch for return or is it too much?
i made sump out of reg 29gal w/ baffles.

Thanks

i have a one inch drain and a half inch return myself, but im using an eheim 1250 pump, which i believe if i remember correctly at the moment is max 320 gph... imnot sure if the pumps a step or two up are larger return... with the head loss i have, i probably get a turn over through the refuge and sump of 5 to 6 times an hour, which i think is good for me... some people like more, some like less...

you need to know the exact outer diameter of the bulkheads you plan on using so you know what size drill bits to use... not saying you dont know this already, just in case ;)

GL and welcome to the 40g breeder club!

I am about to set up a 40B and going with a 1.5 inch drain. That is safely and quietly 700 gallons an hour.
