ok guys, running into a dilemma. i can not figure out for the life of me how to tune/stabilize this beananimal overflow system.

i found out that i needed to drill 1/4 inch hole into main drain to start a siphon. but it still seems like the drain that is only supposed to trickle down is flowing rather quickly.

i currently only have the ball valve on the main drain and a gate valve on the pump return.

i am running 3/4 pipe with 2 returns and a 680gph return pump.

HELP!

Yo turbo, looks good.

What happens if you don't have a hole in the main drain? A siphon should start without that hole. Same principal as a toilet. Once the water gets high enough above the drain, water pressure will force water 'over the falls' creating a siphon. Is the other end of the drain under water in the sump? If it's too far under water there could be a back pressure slowing down the start of the siphon.

How about some pics of it running?

Looks great I am in no way an expert on this system but I have read the build thread on it extensively getting ready for mine.

you have three pipes

1 = main Drain (should be in full siphon and chocked down with valve so that 2nd Drain has water in it)

2= 2nd Drain (the one with the hole in it) should have a small amount of water in it (the hole should have a tube going in the overflow just above normal water level)

3= Emergency overflow ( the up turned elbow)dry pipe in case all else fails

The tube is so the 2nd drain can go into full siphon if need be and stop when water returns to normal

The one possible issue if all else is right is that due to 3/4" Drains you actually have more return flow than a 3/4" can handle at full flow (I don't know the math)

Hope this helps

ismanu that is exactly how i took it also. the only problem is without the main drain turned down the overflow empties to fast and removes all the water from the overflow causing a slurping noise. but once its turned down to have a nice skimming effect the second pipe flows a ton of water not just a small amount. What to do!!

thanks swayza.

woodnaquanut. without hole in main drain it just takes longer to create the siphon.
ill try to get some pics next time i work on the tank.

So you have a hole in the main drain and the 2nd drain ? sounds like you have it turned down too much there is a balance there but with a hole drilled in the pipe it should never full siphon unless the hole is below the waterline or at the very least with a small hole inject a lot of air into the sump

no there is a small hole in the main drain right above water level in sump to start the main drain siphon quicker. i had same results with or without hole in the main drain just a slower siphon.

ok What do you mean by skimming effect, Try this slowly open the valve on main drain until there is just a small amount of water flowing down the second pipe.... in this case what is the effect of the water in the tank and overflow

Ideally you want a little roll over but if you can get the system to balance even with flat water then we can work on that issue but right now just need to find where the problem actually lies

install a gate valve in your drain to tune it. Also i would tie them together, use a seperate like for each drain, but a gate valve on the main drain in critical.
