40 gallon breeder drilling question

does anyone know if this could be done? i have researched some and found that if the bottom is tempered glass, then it can't be done. I went to exotic and they said that it can't be done but i've seen some pple with their 40b drilled with overflows... any info would be gr8. Thanks.

What would one be looking for if they were looking at a tank through polarized sunglasses to tell if it was tempered?

My understanding is that if you look at it with polarized glass - the tempered glass would have slight distortion in it. A non-tempered piece of glass would look clear.

However - I am not convinced that this is a 100% fool proof - but I could be wrong.

I have never heard of this I am fascinated. I have a couple of old polarizing filters that are not worthy of being on a camera any more. I think I will take them with me next time I go to one of the stores that has a large selection of glass tanks. I don't have any polarized sunglasses because they interact with the polarizing filter on my cameras.

Funny - I stopped using polarized glasses (except for sunglasses) because it interact with my flat screen display at work. :P
 
humm.. yea i know that tempered can't be drilled but isn't there makers of 40b that utilize non tempered for the bottom too?
 
Hey Max,

Why not go out the back if the bottom is tempered? You could also contact some of the major manufacturers to find out if they make a 40 with a non tempered bottom. I do know AGA has a chart on there web site listing what tanks have a tempered bottoms, but I do not know how to tell if you have an AGA tank.

john: i don't have one yet. im still looking and trying to ensure that i get one which can be drilled. as far as going out the side... that is a good suggestion as well.
 
rafael: yep im debating getting a 40b. this nano is just a bit small and i can't seem to fit somethings i want into it. sounds like drilling might be out of the question for me. im gonna have to come up with some other idea or get a tank with an overflow built in.

no more external HOB overflow for me. i learned that lesson the hard way. maybe i might end up going with my first design of making a big 40b nano all in one.
 
Why is drilling the back out of the question?

To answer your question about how tempered tanks have holes drilled....
It's done at the factory in 1 of 2 ways. Either they Put plugs in when then glass is molten so it forms around it leaving a hole.
OR
They drill the glass before they place it in the temper oven.

I had a 90G corner Tank that was tempered and drilled at the factory.

With polarized sunglasses you should see lines going across the glass, like when you're in the car, since most car windows are tempered.
 
o yea? hum, i went there the other day but he was really bz with numerous customers so i didn't get the chance to ask him. I'll go by again today to check. if 75$ drilled that be a killer deal since other LFS asks 85-90 for the 40b. Thanks Isaac
