40 Gallon Breeder Setup and Running!

Yeah I'm not so concerned with the drilling portion (well other than screwing up and getting tempered glass), it's more the overflow itself. I don't think I could nicely silicone it into place, nor do I really trust anything I silicon to not leak.

If you have sufficient flow for a reef tank in a 40 breeder you may not need a normal overflow. I've ran a 30 using two holes drilled in the back with just an L bend and a strainer. As long as the surface is moved by power heads then the surface scum will disappear.

Also, if an internal overflow box were to leak who cares. If it is a slow leak then the top of your tank will lower a couple of inches during a power outage if you have no battery back up. Test for what the result of no power would be and leave extra room in your sump. No biggy. If that doesn't make sense let me know and I will clarify.

Yep I drilled it myself with some cheap diamon hole saws that I got from a ebay....let me know if you want it I can find the sellers name. As far as the overflow goes I made it myself. I still have 1/2 of a 12" PVC pipe that i can sell ya to make another overflow. let me know.

I would be interested in another piece of pipe cut that exact same way. I've got two 40breeders that don't yet have holes in them that I plan on drilling.

Hey. Love the Tank. Going to do the same thing myself. Did you make the overflow? Im on a tight budget and am trying to do as much myself. I was thinking of the same type of overflow using pvc and cut it from top to bottom and cut teeth in the top. Yours looks nice and i like the black.
Good luck.

Thanks, Dustin. What all needs to be done to the piece to get it ready to use? Is it cool if I just give you a frag l8r this summer in trade? I'm a little short on cash right now.

really just cut to the correct size, sanding it nice and smooth, and notching it out. Painted if you want. Sure that works...I could always use a frag or two. Let me know next time your working and Ill try and stop in.
