40 Gallon Custom, looking for feedback...

I figure the stand will take me till next week, and then I need to plumb it, so let's hope 2 weeks it will have water in it. I'm motivated though, so don't worry. :)

Eric, Fantastic! The seams look very good, such a clean, sharp looking tank. You must be happy that you went with 1/2" I think it would really set my mind at ease.

I have enjoyed following your build.

Thanks Brandon! Yes, I've very happy with the 1/2" other than the weight! A buddy has a 55 gallon that I can toss around... This thing weighs about 70lbs, I have a heck of a time picking it up due to it's dimensions!!!

Okay update time again... Well after about 5 trips to Lowes today here is where I'm at...

NICE!! Looking really good Eric! Good thing Lowes is close to you. I havent forgotten about your frags. Hey, I did a FWD on the squammy a couple of weeks ago and its doing better now but not quite there yet. I think Ill do another next week. So how long before you get started on the BIG tank in the basement?

Brian, I really need to do some planning, I got up, figured hey I'll work on some plumbing, took my drawing and got all the pieces. Of course when you start to put it together it's not quite the same and still needed 3 more pieces so off I went again... Then I decided to work on the stand. Same story. :)

Russ, glad to hear about the FWD working! As for the BIG tank, it will be a while, my wife is being told she has TMJ (something with her jaw) and it's probably the cause of her migraines... Needless to say the BIG tank money will be going to the Doc's because insurance doesn't cover it. Medical say's it's a dental issue, and dental says it's a medical issue. 2G's just to get started with treatment and that doesn't cover possible surgury or braces (which she already had :( )...

Sorry to hear that about the wife but a happy wife is much better than a big tank. They might cost about the same but I do think the happier wife is better.

Have you had to make the Lowes/Home Depot run for 1 freaking, stinking muther dunking part yet, just to finish something. I really hate those trips. I usually just buy something else just so I don't feel like an idiot checking out with a single 3/4" coupling.
Man I hate those trips.

LOL!!! Yeah, I did that the other day my DIY Kalk Reactor... .12 piece of plumbing and I didn't have any cash... I ended up picking up some 2x2's so I could justify using my debit card. :)

Here's another update...
I've got 3 of 4 sides surfaced and will get the 4th side done as soon as I can. They are glued and screwed to the frame which has also been strengthed. The two back corner walls have had two 2x2's added which are braced with the shell on the outside and the shelf support on the inside.

Here's an idea of how everything will be layed out... The chiller will go in the back corner where the back is cut out for circulation, the 10 gallon sump with EuroReef and Quiet One 3000 return pump next to it. The DIY kalk reactor will sit in-front of the chiller which will be fed from the RODI reservoir 2.5 gallon bucket on the 2nd shelf. Next to the bucket is the 18W UV sterilizer and EVC Ballast for the 250W HQI. In the corner is the Quiet One 5000 closed loop pump. Built into the shelf is the power management.

Very nice Eric!
Will the whole setup be sitting right up against the corner or will you have a few inches of room away from the walls?
What color are you going to stain the stand with?

I am really not familiar with the Artica chillers, but have you left the back end of your stand open for the fan output from the chiller? I think that is what I see, but was going to check your reasoning behind it. :)

Thanks again for sharing! Sorry for all the questions.

No problem Brandon :) I'll be leaving it away from the wall to make room for some plumbing on the closed loop and for some air circulation but only a couple inches (hope it's enough)... I'm still not sure on the color of the stand, but I'm sure it will be light to match the fake stuff in my office. :D

Looking good Eric,
couple of thoughts.
I know some folks have sealed the bottom part of the stand so it can hold water incase of something bad happening. Have you done this? If so, you might want to make some sort of riser for that chiller incase something bad does happen.

You also might want to create a small lip on the second shelf to keep any water away from the panel. I bead of silicone might due.
Just some thoughts.
Brian

This is what I would do on the shelf, take it for what it's worth.
I would create two different dams/beads on the shelf. One around your topoff incase you are or decide to use some type of kalk in it. I would dam/bead that section so that it lands into the bottom floor. Don't want to flood your tank with a couple of gallons of kalk water.

The rest of the area, I would dam it so it goes back into the tank. It might collect a little dust and dirt on the way but if you do get a small leak, it should help keep the system going for a while longer. I would also try to do something like that on the very top if you can. Try to give all possible water a place to go.
Again, take it for what it's worth.
Brian
