Have a few issues with the sump I built the foam let loose on the center overflow so I will have to shut tank off for 24 hours and refoam and then silicone

someone mentions a sock to get rid of waste, and I had no room so I looked around the garage for somthing to make it work:D

endeded up using a salt bucket drilling it and found a dehydrator screen to cover bucket and put wool sheet over

seems to work pretty good and there is a air gap in the bucket so the woll is not touching the water

serves like a sock but with more surface area

I feel for you. There are so many variables when dealing with a DIY system... been there, done that! :o

Hard to tell where your micro-bubbles are coming from...maybe too much turbulence from that large reurn pump... if it was me, I'd remove the salt bucket and wool, and go for individual 4" x14" filter socks for your feeds...

Will you still have the issue when your refugium is brought online? Will you also be feeding your skimmer from the overflow? Is it online yet?

Looks like you need to replicate the system as it will be running in final version to determine if your micro-bubble issue will still exist... does that make sense, or am I just rambling?

Hope you have some good news for us this morning...

Thanks Lightsluvr I have 5 other designs I tried to quiet it down.

I broke down yesterday and got a sheet of 1/2 plexi going to try to build sock holders like my buds sump he is running a 7500 gph pump with no bubbles and he had a 300 gallon so it must be possible. I didnt like that the sock are in the water, but I think I will get over that if it solves the problem. I tied 2 socks on pipes now and it work good but still alot of turblence at intake area.

Only problem I keep running into is the plexi store says the poly used in the tub will not bond at all with plexi  so I will try silicone then foam after with sand in the foam for a better bond .

He said the same thing as you did about getting everything running so today I will try to get enough water to fill the refug and I will look at skimmer again.

Now I have a temp problem up to 82 without lights :eek1:
tried a commercial fan and it dropped 3 degrees. Hate to get a chiller so I will keep trying this fan method.

sock holders...

sock holders...

I went to Wal-Mart and got a package of those self adhesive plastic hooks - back in the hardware department... I stuck a hook on my down pipe just under the elbow and then tie-wrapped it securely. The hook attaches to that plastic piece across the top of the 4" filter sock. That's what I use to hold my socks up. Don't need a holder. They come off easily (with a little twist) for changing every 2-3 days. The bottom of the socks are in the water, but that doesn't bother me, as they really cut down on micro-bubbles and it's amazing how much crud they capture...

thanks forthe idea Lightsluvr I have it kinda like that but it attaches to the pipe I should reinforce it.
But I am going drill holes and mount the other bag with the necks in plexi.

Anyone know how much flow I need for my sps in this tank?

it is 10 ft long I was thinking 2 tunze 6205s or 2 6105 or should I go with 4 total

I have the hammerhead going flow is pretty good I would say around 4500- 5000 gph

here are some updates

here is new sump built it last night till 230 am
IMG_3786.jpg

aparently nothing bonds to plexi and trash can material, so I hope for the best. I used silicone on the first baffle the is not fighing the current. Then I put second baffle in with silicone, let dry alittle while then used foam and sand mix, then foam again and sand ontop, and then one more coat of foam if it looks like alot of foam now ya know y
IMG_3787.jpg

I copied vegaskids sump design. He helped me cut the plexi. Took a long time as we modified his machine to cut a 6 3/4 hole in a 11 inch piecs rather then a 8 inch piece of material.

here is upgraded sump

thanks texmexbigspring its getting there I will get more pics when everything is in. Then again when stand is done and lighint is changed to fan

Yeah it is still kinda loud. But The whole thing is loud right now. I will see what the noise is like when the doors are up. I might insulate the pipe to keep the noise down. The water drops alot down the stand pipe. THe pipes are also vi berating So the insulation might help there as well. Im thinking this will help then I will insulate the wall if I have to with 1 1/2 inch foam, and block in the pump more so the sound goes away from the interior wall.
