They are apparently now available for pre-order, and are the same size as the 250w version. They use 4w LED's, and only come in the 20k version.

I am ordering mine tomorrow :D I found a Authorized Dealer who is selling $200 under MSRP and has free shipping on the first wave.

probably not yet, I need to buy to much stuff still. I will probably have the plumbing done, so I will water test, and turn on the lights to take pics, check how the light penatrates the water, and how it looks overall.

Yeah, I can't justify 3K+ for one, no matter how much it will save in the long run. The boss would neuter me ASAP if I did that.

We married to the same woman??!!LOL!

I looked at it as:

$1000 for MH/PC/T5 setup
500 for chiller (no AC in the house right now)
500 for the next 2 years in bulb replacement
lower power consmption

Plus it was a really really early birthday present :D

Solaris

I've not met you yet but I was interested in the solaris for my 120. The price was my decision factor. However, the long term cost saving in energy consumption should pay for itself over time. I would like to see what the solaris looks like once you get'er up and running.

Shannon, takes about 2 years for return on investment.

So where did you get this figure? Has there been a study on the amount of electricity needed to run the solaris as opposed to the MH, VHO combination, plus the need for a chiller, and bulb replacement. I think just throwing out numbers without truly knowing them is a little reckless. I also don't think the solaris has been available long enough to accurately get these numbers.

I would like Robert to get his up and running so we could get a little bit more info. Here that Robert, get on the ball.:D

there were several users who bought the 250w version, and noticed a decrease in their electric bill. They were out in AZ, and posted that in the solaris thread in the equipment forum. I don't know how the long term savings is, as they have only been around for 9 months or so.... I guess we will see. I have direct sun hitting the bottom right corner of the tank in the late afternoon. Since we don't have AC in the house and it averaged around 80 last summer, I don't know If i would have needed one, but I assumed I might... Honestly I still might, but wont know till summer, and once the tank is up.

here is a users (ppht) post on the solaris thread...

I am not speaking for everyone here but I have to guess. We didnt just spend Aprox $2200 on lights to save on elec only... My reasoning is Heat in my office which is crazy off the halites. 2. I had my AC full blast in the summer and barely could feel it. 3. Having to Wonder if your lights getting weak or not, even though they look fine. 4. I like technology 5. Coloring effect is great. 6. They are quiet nd compact 7. And yes the electric bill is almost half. About $50 a month so far... I can buy more frags

Russ, if my house gets over 75 degrees, my tank will heat up to 84 degrees. If it stays at 73 degrees, I heat up to about 81. I have fans blowing accross the top of the water, and one in the sump. I think there are several people up there using chillers. I know Eric D did and I think Chris is now.

Now I wonder how much cooler the solaris is? Do you still need to run fans, or does it just not put out that much heat?

I own one of the 20K 250 W 48" and Its saving me alot on elect. Id buy another one and will eventually go all in for the 72" 400 watt no question for my 300 gal.
