5.5g AGA Nano-Reef In tank ( Sump / Fuge ) + ( Hood / Light ) Upgrade Journal

Oh...and dont worry about the temp....79.9 isnt that high...if it peacs to like 80-85, youve got a real problem.

Maybe add a fan to the hood or as a surface agitator.

And yeah....your hammer coral looks amazing! :)

I could swear that is a frogspawn you have posing as a hammer. It is definitely a two branch LPS, but the polyps don't have the shape of a hammer coral. Maybe a different kind of hammer, but they are typically bright green. Frogspawn branches like that and come in all kinds of colors--greens, browns, pinks, blues, whites, etc. Plus their polyps can look different depending on the time of the day, lighting conditions, what kind of water flow is going past it, the health of the coral, if it's hungry or not, etc; you'd almost think a frogspawn shows emotions.

Search for some "hammer coral" pics and compare them to what you have. Then search for "frogspawn coral" pics and compare those. You let us know what it looks more like. More pics of that particular coral would help with the ID.

Otherwise, looking really good. Great picture taking, what kind of camera? Your setup looks very similar to Ben's 5.5. (Btw, what happened to that thing, was following it through every update.) Keep up the good work, NYproDJ.

I thought so as well, but being that I am not one to contradict others, and being that my initial preception may have been wrong, I did not want to say it was frogspawn not hammer. It is frogspawn.. i just wasnt oing to say he was wrong about his won coral.

But if you knew it was a frogspawn, call it a frogspawn and tell him that the person who sold it to him or whatever should polish up his coral naming. There are lots of good books out there to do this. And especially if this person has a business doing this. Then wow.

If he was showing a picture of a duck and he was sure it was a dog because that's what the guy at the pet store sold it as, would you still call it a dog? :D Not trying to bust your b***s alien, just saw something that didnt click in my brain. No harm no foul.

Hammer Coral

Hammer Coral

I hate you both! Blasphemers! justttt kiddin... may-b its a bad pic because thats def hammmer coral it is SUPERBRIGHTGREEN but the pic doesn't do it justice... it got bigger now... i was confused between the differences between it and frogspawn when i first got it so I went on a google expedition and determined it was def hammer coral..and I do put some faith in my LFS because they know their stuff they have the craziest marine items there you wouldn't believe. I will take another picture when I get a chance... but that won't be till friday BECAUSE IM GOING TO SOUTH BEACH WOOOOOOT... waking up in 3.5 hours to catch the plane =) I really hope my housemate takes good care of my nano and its not in totall disarray if not crashed when I get back.. i left him damn good instructions and he's pretty smart... oh and the camera im using is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX9 ... greatttt camera greattt price from buy.com + excellent reviews

BTW Ben's nano died due to heater complications he's not too happy bout it but keep encouraging him to give it a 2nd try and not let sims 2 take over his life poor kid gotta sell down his 75g and that sucks!

So it looks like this now?

Here's the FS:

lg_82716.jpg

And thanks to LiveAquaria for those awesome pics. They are a good site. :D

hammer looks like it has a hammer on the end.

Frogspawn-- well...looks like frog eggs on the end of an anemony. lol

:D

Live aquaria is always good for an id.

Or you could always go to the lfs and get a good book. ;)

yours is most definitely a frogspawn. I'd bet my life on it. hammers don't have little knobs coming off of the main "tentacles". the little knobs on each "tentacle" signifies frogspawn. hammers are like this...

DSCF0262.jpg

see how each "tentacle" is nice and straight. No little knobs. Your LFS needs to polish up on coral ID. especially for something so common...

DEFINITLY HAMMER CORAL`

DEFINITLY HAMMER CORAL`

Based on those pictures it looks nothing like FS .... it's 100% hammer coral... I'm in southbeach now so I can't snap a better shot but I def will on friday... I can't believe a poorly shot photo created so much controversy! Definitly the first picture from Live Aquaria.... it looks almost exactly like that in real life same color and shape... guess hooterhead lost his life! jk jk

Coral Rocks

Coral Rocks

Hey peoples... I found some big porous coral fragment rocks on the beach and I think they would make good live rock if I could seed them and turn them into live rock with may-b some of the quality LR I have now and some garf grunge (www.garf.com) ... I will take some pics of them when I get back friday... do you think using these rocks is safe to do? Thanks for your opinions...

if you think they are made of calcium carbonate, then yes i think they should be safe and even beneficial as they will provide natural buffer. I assume they were washed up on the beach and have been dry? That way you have no need to worry about hitchhikers.
If you are worried about pollution at all, the least i would do is soak them in some fresh water for a while and let everything leach out, but i see no need to worry.

I would use them

sometimes lps like frogspawn, torch, and hammer fuse together and make a kind of morph... this is most likely because they are very closely related all being from the same genus but different species. It is possible some of you are identifying the clearly frogspawn melted tentacles as frogspawn and he is identifying the clearly hammer tentacles as hammer... when in fact it could easily be both.... i have seen all combinations of 2 of the 3 and one that had all 3 mixed together... just a note...

Thanks Jamie & R00onmac for your input... just got home from south beach... was amazing I will post some pics when I get home late tommorow evening... can't wait to see my tank... my housemate said it was doing great... but unfortunatly my domino damselfish didn't make it... it seems he might have had cancer? Who knows... more on this later...

Long awaited updates!

Long awaited updates!

Sorry I took so long to get back... alot of catching up and unwinding from my trip to south beach with my girl and my best... good times... anyway when I got back from south beach I found billions of pods in my tank, probably thanks to the cheato I got from a friend... also my domino damsel died a mysterious death. I have since replaced him with a bright blue yellow tailed damsel... who is snacking on the pods big time. My coral banded and a few of my hermits have shed again, my corals are thriving and some of my zoos are making baby zoos... oh yeah my featherduster survived the whole tank transfer and scraping it off the wall with a steak-knife... hardy freakin creatures! Right now here is a list of the tanks occupants:

5.5g AGA Nanoreef Custom Built
-Assorted Zoos
-Pulsing Xenia (GROWS REALLY FAST)
-Nice Colony of Yellow Button Polyps
-Big Brown/Green Button Polyps
-Unidentified SPS colony?
-Nice Hammer Coral
-Magnificent Featherduster
-One pink fuzzy mushroom
-Small rock of GSP ... might glue it to a bigger rock?
-6 Hermits (3 Red 3 Blue)
-1 Turbo Snail
-2 Nassarius Snails
-1 Margarita Snail
-1 Astea Snail
-Electric Blue and Bright Yellow Tail
-Coral Banded Shrimp

And now... pictures!

Really really nice tank. If you did consider building like whole setups like that. Built in fuge, hood and base, and told alot of people about them, I think they would sell good. I would consider buying one, but first, I have to get my own tank good again.

Hermit Nudity

Hermit Nudity

**WARNING THE FOLLOWING PHOTOS CONTAIN FULL HERMIT NUDITY**

Everythings going great with the tank... more updates when I put some more base rock in and attach my lose polyps/gsp... but for now:

Very few people get to see their hermits naked... so here you go:

great build...the only problem I see is the overflow. From that one early pic it looks like the water level in the display is even with the wall...Any algae or coraline on those four slots might cause an overload(not like water on the floor). If you would have cut those two inner slots the same it would have been better.

Great tank!
