5.5g nano log

Looking Good

I have a yellow watchman goby in a 5.5 and it's been doing fine. They really need a lot of good hiding places though. They're never comfortable being exposed but if they have hiding places they're out a lot more ime.

Good to know. I'll make as many little crevaces as I can. If I decide to get a yellow watchman, I definately will like to see him alot. I think they're very cool.

Stand is FINISHED! I really like it alot and cant wait to get the canopy done. In all the excitement I had to go get a resident, so I went to the LFS tonight and got a Coral Banded Shrimp. He looks so big in the tank! I know I didnt cycle it long enough, but I'm not seeing any spikes, so I'll cross my fingers. Without further adu, the pics....

Its sitting on the floor just so I could see it set up, but I'll be moving it to a nightstand or something soon.

Thanks again for taking a look

Just posting to say that I have been working on the canopy. I have the glue drying as we speak and it now looks basically like a box without the top or bottom. I also routed out a hole to recess a fan into. I am not positive that I will need it at this point. Right now I have a 32w PC on it and am just laying across the tank and the temp is only going up about .5 degrees. Basically, its laying right on the water. So when I get it into the canopy and its 6 inches off the water, will it raise the temp at all? Will there be a need for a fan? Only time will tell, i guess. Also, I'm thinking of getting another 32w 15" PC retro to fit in. So I probably will need the fan then. I'll try to get some pics soon to show the progress.

Its been quite a while since I updated this, but not much has changed. I've been quite busy, but I have done some stuff. I decided to jump in and get my feet wet with a couple mushrooms, star polyps, and I think they are zoos. All very small frags. The mushrooms are single and I put in 1 orange, 2 green, and a blue. I can find 3 but the orange got loose and havent seen it since the day I put it in. Hopefully he found a happy place and will thrive. I put the star polyps in 4 days ago and have yet to see them open up, I hope they do soon so they can photosynthesize (sp?). And the zoo's, or what I think are zoo's, look really healthy and are pretty to look at. I only have a small frag of them with 3 polyps on it. I didnt get any work done on the canopy even though its so close to being finished and my wife says it looks slopy with the light resting on a piece of wood and a hammer layed across the top of the tank. :D Anyway, here are some pics. I pulled some rock out today, was starting to bother me when I would have to arrange something on the bottom and I'd have to move all the rocks around.

Any comments are definately welcome. Thanks for taking a look.

luscien - lol, thanks! I really like crab too, his eyes almost dont look real. But I put him in my 55 because I saw him at the top of the nano out side the water and I didnt want to have to worry about him. I havent seen him since.

george1098 - thanks, me either. I need to get my rear end in gear.

I've been having problems with my heaters. I started with one, and it was wierd as it would be set on 79, but would be on when the water was 81. So I threw it out and bought a new one. That one was working well for about a week and now its doing the same thing. I have it set at 75!! Yet its was reading 81.5 and the heater light was on. I dont want to buy any more, but I will go get one more. If it doesnt work, I dont know what I'll do, but I'll be very ticked off. I'll probably just keep buying new ones every week  Do you guys have any preference on brands? I think I remember reading that Stealth was a good one? Maybe not. The one I am using now is from Marineland, but dont know the model. Its a 25 watt.

I was just about to ask you what type of heater you were using. Let us know what you end up using and what seems to work well. It all looks good to me. If you run into someone that is picky about taxonomy they might yell at you for calling it a crab. I think it is related to the porcelain "crabs" and anemone"crabs" with only three sets of back legs.
I think they are awesome, but some species can nip at corals and other inverts so you may try another thread about him somewhere and try to get an ID.

Well, I didnt do anything about the heater yet, so no new info there. But I have a bit more serious problem now, big algae bloom! Mostly all green hair algae but there is a little red hair too. Unfortunately, there is a big patch of red hair right next to the only corals I can get to grow, my polyps. I hope I can get it taken care of before they are smothered. Here are some pics....

So I tested my water quality, they read phosphate 0ppm, pH 8.4, ammonia .5ppm (recent spike, was at 0 3 days ago), trite 0ppm, trate 20ppm...

And I went to That Fish Place and got a lettuce nutibranch (sp?) and 2 blue legged hermits...

I really hope I can get this under controll before my polyps succumb to the beast. Any ideas how to combat this? I know its a new tank and I'll see my share of algae blooms, but that doesnt make it any easier. Thanks for taking a look.

I would double check with others, but my first response would be to pull as much of it out of the tank as I could. I was going to say reduce the lighting period until you mentioned coral. Perhaps you can move some rocks that have had problems to the bottom for a little... A fresh water dip will clear it right up, but may kill a lot of good things as well. You wouldn't be able to do it with all your rocks either because it is a new system.(Even in an established I wouldn't dip all the rock at once)
Find things that eat to help out a little bit, but I would say you have to kill, they will keep it from coming back if you get it down to nothing. Even if you pulled every piece you can see out small bits will start, but if you have things that will eat that particular time then they can make sure there is no come back.
