It will be interesting how you will achieve this with lighting etc as I can see that posing some particular challenges.

I'd love to see more of the filtration system and how the system is going to work.

I'm Convincing the wife that we need a family holiday to Thailand :)

The only thing that we have not decided is lighting . Although we have natural sunlight but I will need to measure par value when the tank is filled with sea water first . Then there is the question of whether LED will be able to penetrate to the bottom of the tank ( 3m) or do I have to use the outdated metal halide technology ?

Please convince your wife to come and visit us in Thailand.

I'd love to come over. As long as kids are allowed that would be great. (haven't convinced her to fly to the other side of the world without them yet). :)

Have a chat with Bill Wan, he has a similar depth (possibly sized) tank and has been running MH and then LED. He's looking to switch back to MH, it might be worth chatting to him about his experiences with both.

I am sure kids will love Thailand , many interesting places for kids . Thanks for your advice .

You may have previously answered this question. How are you planning to fill the tank? Mixing your own SW? or, being located on the water, will you be using natural sea water?

Natural sunlight is best, but I wouldn't say Metal Halide is outdated. It's still used by most of the major public aquariums. Other than natural sunlight, for depth I don't think it can be beat.

Here's a local tank to us lit by Natural/Metal Halide:

This picture I found shows the top of the reef and the ring of Halide lights above it:

This is really a fantastic build and I can't wait to see it on our next trip to Bangkok. From my travels in Thailand I've found that hotels there are very artistically designed (generally unlike that in the US) and yours is no exception. Beautiful!
