Now you did it, Youve got me thinking again. hmmm, I could cut mine down by 50% and go with just four MH's. At 18cents a kilowatt, thats huge savings.

Sanjay, if your right, Ill need your address. you will be receiving a gift from me every year.

You might as well send the gift now :D :D here is a picture of the penn state tank to convince you that you can have a packed reef (500G - 96"X43"X30") full of corals and clams with just 4X400W 10K lamps in the lumen arc reflectors and no supplemental lighting and still get great colors on corals. this tank has been running with this light setup for almost 7 years now.

Shweet! That looks so good, at first I thought it was painted. especially when that powder blue tang is looking at us. the colors just pop! that clam is a monster. the acros look amazing. Ill try not to beg for frags later..lol
seriously, thanks sanjay for putting your build thread up. I more than anyone can appreciate what went into what youve done with it and benefitted from the info. I cant wait to see the friuts of your labor in a few months.

I've seen the PSU tank more than a few times and I can tell you that the picture does not do it justice. The colors are amazing and the acros are HUGE.

Sanajy not trying to steel your thread at all but I would like your expert opinion. I have a 84" x 72" x 30" SPS tank that I am trying to figure out lighting on. I have two cross braces and a 6" euro brace. My tank openings are basically 5 feet x 19". Obviously there are 3 openings. My tank is viewable from the 7' and 6' through low iron. I do not want to run 10K lamps and am very confused at the moment on the best lighting setup. My thoughts have been to either run 8 400W's or 11 400W's. I have a corner overflow in the back corner of the tank so it would either be 3, 3, 2 or 4, 4, 3. I was going to use the new lumenmax 2 reflectors. I love the look of Steve Weasts tank (Oregon Reef) it is one of the best. I have talked to him and he is running 14 400's all with luminarcs. Thanks in advance. Ian

Sanjay - Very nice, I just skimmed through all 25 pages. Very nice setup. I have been considering upgrading to these same exact dimentions in glass also, it is nice to see a thread on a tank this size.

A couple of questions...

For lighting are you only using 3 x 400 10k?

What do you plan on keeping in your tank? (SPS, Softies, anems, clams, a mix, etc.)

Who made the tank?

Did you use starfire on the front panel?

Sanjay,

How's the new PSU Tank coming along?

Ron:

That tank is not for aquarium purposes. Its being used for imaging water flow for some research at penn state.

Ian,

I would go with the lumen arcs. If it was me I would try to go with 6 or lumenarcs and see how it works out. In combination with the aquascaping you may be able to get by with 6-7 400W 10Ks.

But since you do not want to run the 10Ks you may want to go with 8 of some high PPFD 20Ks. With the eight I would probably stagger them and got 3,3,2 with the rows not all aligned.

Yes, I am right now planning on using only 3X400W 10Ks. The tank will mostly be SPS with some soft, LPS and clams. I am going to avoid anemones... they can cause too much damage and are often difficult to get out of a big well establshed reef.

THe tank was built by Aquarium Obsessed.

The front panel is low iron glass - 3/4". I was told that the starfire comes in size upto 1/2" and would have to be laminated to get it thicker.

Ian,

You may want to try the lumen max by sunlight supply, since they are larger they may give you a slightly bigger spread as you move away from the source.

sanjay.

Sanjay will the lumen max keep the light from coming out into the room,my tank is in the living room and if you are setting down it would help to know if the lights would shine in your eyes.

This would depend on the angle you are looking at. and how high the fixture is off the top of the tank.

Let me jump in and say the tank is very nice and well built. We are happy with it. It is being in our lab for some detailed flow field experiments not related to aquariums.

Ok.. I am back from MACNA. Got a chance to meet the AO crew. Nice bunch of folks.

They will be stopping by today to fix the front pane, and then I'll be off and running after the curing is complete (10-12 days). Woohoo...just a couple of weeks away from getting the ball rolling on this again.
