500G (84X48X30)- NOW REAL !

Hi Sanjay;

Again, Amazing tank:eek2:

I've been reading this tread from day one, but I guess I'm getting old:D

Can you list your setup again? I am very curious about your circulation and so.

Thanks

OK.. Since I have trouble finding stuff in this thread.. here is a quick recap of the set up again.

Lights: 3X400W in Lumen Arc III reflectors, using Giesmann Coral single ended MH lamps

Circulation: from sump to tank - Sequence Dart
2 closed loops - using sequence darts.. returned through 3 1" sea swirls
2 Ecotech Vortec propellor pumps

I HP chiller driven by Iwaki 70 and returning to tank

5ft tall ETS style downdraft skimmer, modfied with a beckett driven by Iwaki 55.

2 filter chambers - one with Carbon and 1 with Phosar HC, driven by teeing off the main circulation loop.

Calcium reactor - with 2 6"X24" chambers one chamber filled with the coarse Shuran type coral media and the other with ARM/crushed coral

A Neptune Aquacontroller III used primarily for monitoring.

Sanjay, are your darts noisy?

No, they are very quiet. The noisiest thing in my system is the Beckett sucking air. That noise drowns everything else.

how often do you do waterchanges and how much do you do at a time?

I try to do about 75G of water changes per month, since that is the size of the make up salt water tank.

It does not all happen at once. since I use the discarded water in this tank to do water changes in my other tanks. So I may end up doing 15 G water change on my 55G tank one week, and use the 500G tank water as replacement.. then replace the 15G in the 55G tank. Another 10G on my 29, and some on my nano.. so it not very systematic water changes.

I am the one who dissappeared, or its that you who did. You know where to find me :-)

In the last couple of weeks I have done a major pruning and slashing of the corals in the tank. Colonies had overgrown and were starting to cause problems.

Also added some diversity away from the acros and sps, along with some interesting new fish.

Here is a picture of a lobo I added and a serranus bass from West africa.

This lobo should be called "why is the clarion not the the 500 gallon reef lobo"

This tank is so great i just love it. I wish i was hear from the beginning but i was not. But anyway great tank and love everything about it. Question for ya. Do you dose anything in your tank for the corals?

what temp do you run your tank at?

how much daily variation do you allow?

I have my chiller set to go off at 80F. Ini the summer the tank temp will drop to about 78F at night. In winter tank will run between 75-78F.

The clarion in the reef, could be a problem. It would most likely be fine with the sps and LPS and soft coral, but could become a problem for the fleshy sps that don't extend out much... eg. acans, lobo, trachy, etc. I had in QT with some acans and it ate up 2 of the small colonies while I was out of town one weekend. So if well fed it may leave them alone, but when hungry it could create problems.

Also, I am more concerned about how it will treat the other fish as it grows up. Did not want to risk upsetting my spawning pair of joculators and bellus angels. Its fine with the maroon clownfish pair and yellow tang in my 55g, but does like to chase the royal grammas in there.

I do not know much about its adult behavior, so I have kept it out of the main reef, and put it in a soft coral dominated reef.
