The hood did not get done, still getting some finishing touches and a few coats on them.

One problem. The dual dursos in the overflow are LOUD!!! and creating a flushing effect. I drilled 1/2 inch holes in them and then placed a 1/4 inch piece of tubing in the hole to disrupt some of the gurgling, but still very annoying.

Any thoughts???

FYI

Rock is held up with three 1/2 acrylic rods per pile and everything is sitting on 3 cinder blocks that sit directly on the bottom.

WOAH! I definitely have to come over and check this out in person soon. What kind of piping are you using? Is that heat bent PVC?
No clue about the noise have you read over everything http://www.dursostandpipes.com/ ? They have a couple of comments on there about gurgling and flushing noises and how to get rid of them. I'm sure you could probably find at least 100 threads on RC about dealing with the noise trouble is sorting through all the good and bad advice from both experts and armatures.
Things are looking good so far.

Wow Russ!

You have really moved your tank project along very fast.!! That is a lot of work to have done in such a short time. I have been enjoying this thread on your progress. Thank you.

You seem to have switched the tiered tubs to something like i was kinda suguesting earlier. just a little difference in elevation with large drain lines at the water level to flow water from one tub to the next. that should be much better to work with and more stable. that tower of brick looked a little tipsy with the bottom drain arrangement and 6 foot high elevation.

Have you considered putting the luminarcs on a bar that you can raise and lower to adjust your lighting intensity? they seem a little high off the water. I guess the hood to cover the pendants will have a reflective finish inside. at least white paint to reflect more light into the tank. and air vents at the top to provide natural air circulation of heat to the room for the AC to handle. or in winter, to help heat the house. I like to design my smaller DIY hoods to work without fans. just natural convection circulation. I leave a gap between the tank and hood to allow cooler room air to flow in and up through the hood. kinda like the next generation of nukes, natural recirc cooling. old habits die hard.

Jon is right. there is lots of info on how to quiet noisy durso overflows. I believe the RC DIY forum has lots of solutions too.

Nice BLUE room!! . looking good Russ!! I hope it cycles real fast for you.

The pipe is flex PVC or spaflex, works very well for turns without joints.

I looked at the durso website and have tried a few things. Sound is much better, but still a little gurgling. Will play around with an air valve and tubing. Also plan to seperate the two standpipes in the overflow instead of having them both on the same water level.

Ken,
I have a panasonic 8 inch through wall vent that I will put through the wall to give some circulation so the lights will not get too hot.

Thought about the pulley system for the lights, but was too tough for access with it all being enclosed as it will be. They sit about 24" off the water level. Still enough room to work, but close enough to function. Most of the SPS will be on the top anyway.

That's cool Russ. the fan will work great. 1600 watts of lights will be like having a little ceramic room heaters in there dumping heat all day.

as I understand it, the trick to quieting a durso is to raise the inverted U-tube overflow up to near but still below the slotted overflow level and have an air vent on the top of the U to prevent gurgling by equalizeing air pressure.

They have 1 1/2 and 1" at lowes in the PVC isle in middletown. It is not really that expensive. If you need more than 20-30 ft get it from savko.com. about $1.25 a foot there.

Ken,
I did have the dursos raised to near the top of the overflow. It is not the overflow water propper that is making the noise, but the air sucking through the top of the durso. It will take some playing, but hopefully I will find a happy medium.

Thanks
RUSS

Putting a small tube into the overflow center will quiet the noise down. You may have to raise and lower the tube. I used a 1/4" Flex tube and zip tied it when the noise stopped. It keeps the air from being sucked down the overflow and the qurgling noise.

what ID size are you looking for Jon? most places have the grey flex PVC 1/2", 3/4" and1 inch ID in the electrical dept. as flex waterproof conduit and larger ID white flex PVC in the tube and hose dept for spa plumbing.

They do not carry it at HD that I have seen. I know that lowes carries the flex

I did put the tube in the top of the durso that seems to help, but still a lot of gurgling, so sucking sound though. Research will continue.

On a much smaller scale, I have found that putting a bio-ball on top of the overflow helps cut the noise. Sort of jamming it into the round hole on top of the cylindrical sponge.

Maybe you can find a bio-biggie-ball, of sorts ....

Cabinets should be done this weekend.

The odd fish is a Dussumieri Tang. Surprisingly got him at TPP with the red sea sailfin.

Both doing great.

Got a boatload of snails and hermits at the same time and between them all cleared up the green alge bloom in 3-4 days. Now the tank is spottless.
