50g SPS Cube

Great job on your tank.
Flow has always been a pain to dial in for my 60 cube, so I have to ask, are you happy with your controllable Tunzes? I've been dealing with 2 MP40's dialed back, which then breakdown, now I'm to 2 non controllable modded 6025's that are way too much, so they can only run one at a time. I'm subscribed to see the tank continue to evolve and mature.

I'm very happy with them, ecotech a are too loud for me and are not adjustable enough, I can angle the Tunzes around the coral growth and they are way quieter than ecotech powerheads

Seeing them in your tank sold me, so I placed an order for 2 of them from Premium Aquatics, and a 7096 from a member of the local club. Thanks for the response and keep doing what you do, its working well.

No problem and thank you!...I'm sure you will be happy with them

Great thread! Can I ask how you are taking good pics under the LEDs? Filter or different led setting?

Thank you....the pictures are actually straight off my iphone with the lights running at full intensity. The only thing I do is turn of the pumps to get rid of the shimmer

Your tank & corals look stunning! Thanks for setting up this thread & sharing with us.

It is interesting how your cube tank & most cube tanks look rather small. I would have guessed it to be 28-46 gallons.

I would like to ask you a few questions in order to continue my education of reefs. On my 2nd tank I am doing more SPS's & starting to love it. Soon I will probably get into more harder to keep SPS & I am trying to prepare.

1) How often & how much of a water change do you perform & do you disturb, stir up & siphon the gravel EACH TIME? Some say don't disturb, others say you have to.

2) Do you see any critters in your sand bed? Which is normally seen in fine sand beds, such as bristle worms or any worms or live acctivity? Do you see any copepods in your tank & is it necessary to "feed" the corals copepods?

3) Others have proven & your thread really shows that A LOT of rock is really not needed in order to keep a reef. Your tank is & will be mostly covered in corals anyways. Instead strategic rockscaping is beneficial. How do you feel about the minimalistic scaping & it's regards to advantages/disadvantages with reefkeeping?

4) At this point if you were to dose with Randy's 2 part, how many ml's of 2 part do you think you would have to dose with?

Thanks...subscribed.

Thank you for the kind words, I change 10-15 gallons weekly and I siphon the substrate every time, it is amazing how much junk I pull up every time, I think it is very important to keep the substrate clean. You could probably go a good amount of time without siphoning but it basically acts like a sponge and at some point it will reach maximum saturation and will begin to cause adverse effects. I don't notice anything in my sand, not even small tubeworms, this could just be due to the fact that I used dry rock and crushed coral and all my coral came in as frags without any base rock so those creatures have never been introduced to my system. I do have some copepods, the must have came in on the frags, as far as their importance to the system, I think it is minimal, I have treated for redbugs in the past, I used 10x the normal dosage of interceptor and pretty much wiped out anything that wasn't a fish or a coral and my sps looked great afterwards. I have had tanks with minimal rock work and I have had tanks with a lot of rock work, both ways achieved good results, I think it is just personal preference, it is easier to keep the tank clean with less rockwork. Unfortunately I have no experience with dosing, I have always used calcium reactors so I can't answer that last question.

very nice tank great work!
question about the kessils, do you find they have a spotlight effect? Altho it doesnt appear that way in your pictures, sometimes fts shots can be decieving.
thanks

thank you, I do not notice a spotlight effect although I have never looked for that with the Radion turned off so I couldn't tell you for sure, they appear to have a good spread though

SO I'm about to chop everything to do some trading so I thought I'd take some last picks, probably be a few months before everything fills back in

Here's a current FTS, I added a little island in the front left so I could squeeze in a few more frags

this is just a shot that I liked

and this is kind of funny, from the front my microthelma looks normal but from the top and the side you can see the little "wall" being built from the coral growing towards the glass and my algae magnet shaving off the tips

Great Job. You have some skills.

I was looking at that calcium reactor a few years ago when it came out. Any quirks you could mention? It's only supposed to be rated for what 75g? But I bet it could easily keep up with 100-150g with regular water changes.

Forgot to ask. What salt do you use?

Thank you... I don't have any complaints about the reactor, it would work fine for a 100g but you will be replacing media very often, it does not hold much and ever since my coral started growing in I have been adding aragonite every few weeks. I use Coralife salt
