I saw on craigslist someone in Rochester has 75 food grade barrells for sale for $15. each. I know people are looking for those all the time. I dont know how to move over the link, but you can search in todays general section.

This is most likely Chris from Needabarrel.com
I picked up several different types of barrels from him and they are super.

I actually emailed the guy, and it is someone named Chris. He sent me some pics, and the barrels do look quite nice. I may grab one or two for myself, and I will definitely let everyone know how they turn out. Thanks for the tip, Tent Boy!!

Make sure you tell Chris what you need the barrel for.
He has a number of food and medical grade barrels.
I used the medical grade barrels because all of the original product had been bagged first. That said, make sure you clean out your barrel good before using it. I would recommend doing a vinegar wipe down with a good rinse.

I emailed the seller and it is Chris from needabarrel. He said that these barrels used to contain glycerine or proylene Glycol used for the food and drug industry. Would these leech into the plastic and harm the fish???

That is the good thing about Chris.
He is very upfront as to what was in the barrel before he bought it.

The chemicals you mention are used as solvents for drugs that cant be dissolved in water. I would think it would be ok. But I would rather have had a barrel with a bagged substance in it. Did he have any of those? The substances you mention are for making injectable drugs (ie. it is used to dissolve the active agent).

what ever was in those barrels will probably always be in those barrels.

several years ago I got a couple blue 55 drums though Randy (areef.net). They had maple syrup in them before. I took them home and powerwashed the heck out of them for two days with an industrial powerwasher, still smelled like maple syrup. Soaked with vinegar for over week, still smelled. Soaked with RO/DI water for 2 more weeks, still smelled. I finally gave up trying to clean them and just started using them. I constantly have had both ro/di & saltwater in them for over 3 years now for doing my water changes. When empty I still smell the maple syrup, almost as strong as 3 years ago. I also have to say that I didn't notice any problems with my corals when I started using the barrels. Must like maple syrup too.

This made me chuckle a bit.
I'm sure Jeff will like this story.

Before I bought the barrels I use for aquarium use from Chris (ie. with only bagged contents inside), I had bought two 55G drums from someone in Canandaigua for rain barrels. The barrels had spent several years as floats on the lake.

I looked at the label... and they had been used for the lemon syrup used in Mike's lemonade. Funny thing is that I didnt realize that Mike's was made in Rochester. The barrels still have the faint smell of Mike's despite multiple washes.

In any case... we now have a little of Mike's in all of our vegetables. Perhaps that explains my behavior a bit  At least now I like vegetables and help in the garden.

One time I bought a handful of drums that had medical or food alcahol in it. They basically disinfected themselves. I still clean them out just to be sure.

Most of the plastic containers are safe to use for your aquarium even if they had food ingredients in them. I try to buy new if I can, but if clean used come up I still use them. When I get the berrels I will rinse them out with a hose, fill up to the top with acid water (pretty strong) let that marinate for a day or so. Drain it out and rinse well. Repeat that same process but with bleech water (also strong). After all that I have filled up the drums with tap water and ran powerhead quick filters full of cheap activated carbon for a week, replacing carbon daily. No smell after and the berrel is like new.

Just wanted to bump this back up to the top...Met Chris yesterday and picked up 2 55gal barrels from him. I can't say anything but good things about the guy...spent about a good 1.5hr talking with him. I still have to clean them out, but if your looking for barrels, this is your guy. I need one more so i'll be calling him again, but for the price and the honesty, i'd say its worth meeting him.

Super... I'm glad to hear that others have had the same experience.
The other barrels he has are also super... mods-- no relation here just a satisfied customer.

If anyone from Rochester is getting one and plans to come to the Buffalo swap on Saturday, I'll gladly donate a frag if you can grab one for me! :)
