55g Stocking List - opinions welcome

Do you plan on keeping shrimp? If so, the hawk fish and mystery wrasse with be an issue.

If you are referring to an Serranocirrhitus latus for the sunburst anthia, they are not like other anthia and you might get away with one feeding per day (( though 2 would be better )).

I have a cleaner shrimp now that's almost 2" long but I don't think he is going to make the move into the next tank. I think hes just going to stay in the 12g aquapod, until I remodel it and when that happens he'll be at my LFS being babysat along with my yellow watchman and occelaris clown. Other than that no shrimp are planned for this build, just snails and possibly a starfish.

And the Serranocirrhiitus latus was the one I was looking at online.

Sunbursts are not like the anthias that need to be fed many times a day and 2 times a day would be fine (once in the morning once at night). I love the long nosed hawk and owned one a while back, but they will eat shrimp and when they get bigger they can also go after smaller gobies. For the clowns I would just go with a nice pair of true perculas and call it a day. If you are dead set on a wrasse I would look at one of the many flasher wrasses out there. They are less aggressive than a mystery, can be absolutely stunning in color, and are more invert safe.

You say you'll be feeding once a day at most. I think two feelings per day is minimum for a lot of reef fish. And definitely once a day. This will matter regarding your stock list. Will you get an automatic feeder?

Ok, as stated before, don't do the maroon. I have a scar left from my maroon... just sayin...

Don't do mandarin and wrasses together unless you have a ton of pods. They'll be competing for the same foods and that's a competition the mandarin won't win.

+1 on sunburst anthias. Great fish. Timid though, so try to add this first.

Mystery wrasse can work out if you add it last so that it's on the bottom of the pecking order.

If you reefin' skills are up there and you want a bit of a challenge, get a leopard wrasse. Awesome fish, super friendly and leaves everyone else alone. If you can get it to fatten up you're in the clear.

I dont feed dry foods because of the poly-phosphates in the foods raises the phosphate in the water. I currently feed my fish Rod's complete reef and San Franscisco Bay Frozen brine that I melt down and rinse (the rod's i dont rinse because the company pre-rinses it before freezing). So the auto-feeder would prob be out of the question. I normally feed my tank an hour before the lights turn off in my tank. I was hoping to keep up the habit. For my nano I feed every other day.

True for some wrasses, not all.

Over time, I don't think this really matters. Mysteries get more cantankerous as they get older. Rearranging rock, giving fish a "time out" in the sump, etc. are just temporary fixes in my opinion that won't really permanently change the dynamic.

I do love the look of the leopard wrasse. Does anyone else have any experiences with them and how to keep them. I do love challenges.

Well, leopards are one of the wrasses that will compete with a mandarin for pods, so you will have to choose between them. A 55 is probably not big enough to provide for both.

I was reading more in depth about them in some science logs and care guides online and they seem like the perfect amount of difficulty for what Ill have going on. THe manderin can wait lol. Does anyone personally have a leopard wrasse, if so did everyone use the quarintine tank to de-worm them before placing them into their DT or tell me your stories.

I wouldn't do the maroon clown, they are cute when small but get really big and aggressive. I can see the temptation though because they are guaranteed to pair up with your nem. I saw one at my LFS the other day, someone had brought it home only to have it beat up the triggers which were already in the tank, and the triggers were twice the size of the clown!!! That is an unheard of amount of aggression, so use caution.

You sure buddy? i had a rather large Maroon in a tank with 2 smaller tomatoes and they beat the crap out of the maroon.

Note: this is in a 1000gallon tank with 300 anemones.

My maroon is close to 4 1/2" and she is a mean nasty you know what!

I think Im going to go with 2 pink skunks instead of the yellow banded maroon to avoid any headaches along the road. I dont want it to be on permanent time out in the sump. i had a pygmy lionfish like that when I had a 100g FOWLR a few years back.

And at rssjsb thanks for the link, it gave me a lot of insight on the fish and the 5 main hobyist species. Ill have to order one in through the LFS to make sure its good to go before putting it into my tank.

Alright so finally back on the forums after being gone in the desert for a while. Had lots of time to think of what I wanted for the tank (55g with aqueon profilux 2 sump (additional 17g) underneath.)
So these are the fish I was looking at:
- Longnose Hawk
- Potters or Flame Angel
- Ornate or leopard wrasse
- Ignitus or lyertail or sunburst anthias

But I'm still undecided on a clownfish pair to put in. Dont like Picasso's but not completely off to the idea of a genetic altered one. Just has to look natural.

Any help or thoughts would be great. Thanks :)
