So what you said in short was that the LFSs pay more because they're not buying in as much bulk. :)

Everything else mentioned is shared by both online vendors and LFSs. Thats why I was asking about fish.

Cool... thanks!

Road Trip I want to check this store out. I saw part of the build thread b4 it got taken off of rc. Yardsale reefer is a new 1. I may have to use that.

Best store from Atl. to Knoxville. selection is awsome, prices are great for this area. Donny is awsome he will help in anyway possible.

My only complaint was they were closed on my way back from Atlanta on a Monday. :(
How do owners come off thinking they need days off!! How about making the store open 24/7. You never know when you might get a wrasse craving at 2am. ;)

I was afraid I was going to be arrested for staring through the windows. lol

My next trip to Atlanata I will for sure have to stop in.

LMFAO@yall

yall need to come check the LFS here. They have been in business for 30 years and I am willing to bet they havent changed distributors in those years. The mark up on dry goods is x2(use to work there) except on salt. Their cost on salt is $45, thats what THEY pay for it, even though you can run to petco or petsmart or even order it from fosters n smith and get it cheaper then their cost. eyebedam came up here for a visit and I took him there, and Im still laughing at his face when he saw how much a prism deluxe costs there, not the pro, just the deluxe, $190 is what they charge for it. So dividing by 2 to take away the markup, their COST is $95 on it. Ive tried and tried to get them to look at different distributors but they wont. So yeah, not the cheapest place to buy dry goods, their mark up on saltwater fish is x3+8 cause he use to have to go to the airport to pick them up(not anymore but still charges $8 for picking them up when they are delivered now). A 1" clown is $28-8 divide by 3=$6.66 is their cost roughly. Friggin damsels are $15!!!!! If you are looking for quality beginner fish, that is the place to get them cause they quarantine all saltwater fish for 2 weeks before they sale them, which kinda justifies the markup on them. Good luck finding any nice fish there that are not beginner fish, they are few and far between.

If you want corals, good luck, cause you will not find a single SPS coral there, you might find the rare LPS along with washed out brown zoanthids and brown leathers. I bought a 500polyp zoanthid rock for $50 just to see what it was going to be when it colored up in my tank and it turned out to zombie eyes, so I lucked up on that one. Their coral tank is 4x40w normal output fluorescents, which is why there is a lack of SPS/LPS and a lot of brown corals. If you want a mushroom rock, $44 doesnt matter if it has 3 mushrooms or 300, same price.

I stopped selling them frags cause within a week, they look like crap cause of their lighting.

So before complaining about prices somewhere, come by here, its the only place for quality livestock anywhere within 100 miles around here.

I forgot to mention the free nudibranches I got from one of the corals a long time ago, they dont quarantine their corals.

I'm staying in Knoxville for the next month, so I was reading your club forum -

Mostly wanted to say that 5th Day Creations is an awesome name for a LFS.

I am not a fan of the Aquarium in Knoxville. I offered to trade in some of my propogated corals and was told by one of the ladies that has been there since opening (owner?) "If we let you trade stuff in then everyone would start doing it". I was so taken aback by that statement that I was speechless. Wow, to think that we would have a self sustaining hobby that collected very little from the ocean. What a concept. This attitude kept me away from their store for about 7 years. As already stated they are very expensive, and do not care about the impact on the reef. They sell Cleaner Wrasses and other poor choices for the home aquarium without regard to their survivability. I much prefer more ethical stores. Just my 2 cents from past experiences.

They sell cleaner wrasse?! Well, that's put me off forever. I only go by there to pick up tubes and little fixtures and crap when I need them, I've never bought livestock from there mainly because it doesn't look healthy, and it's overpriced. They had a little cherub angel for something like $60 a while back!!

Refusing to trade frags kind of makes them look hypocritical, as they have a frag farm and a sign saying they want to help protect wild reefs!

Neat thread btw! I'm gonna have to check out this place next time I'm down south

Ive heard of stores not wanting to trade frags before, It is sometimes a safety factor. not necessarily about concerving the reefs. There are alot of different ways that people maintain there own tanks, and half seem to be poorly, So if a store takes any coral from anyone who comes in off the street they are taking a big risk. I know of a few people who take corals to the local fish stores if they start looking sick, just to get some store credit before it dies. So in a way I kinda understand why they refused. But I also understand where your coming from to. I take alot of frags to my lfs for store credit but I have done buissness with them for 10+ years. I would probly be more cautious of buying corals form him if I knew he took any corals that people brought in the door. Anyway I guess what im saying is maybe they didnt know you or know how you maintain your tank. Spend some time building a relationship with the store and then maybe see if they are interested in trading.
Again I dont know that store or the situation so this is just my 2cents! im not taking either side cause I see it from both.

Also what is wrong with selling a cleaner wrasse? I had one in my tank for several years till it jumped into my overflow. just curious why all the issue with them?

The Aquarium staff knew me well. I had done business with them for years. There were only two regular employees at that time which I believe started the business. I had followed them throught their 3 relocations. I don't think there is much if any more risk in taking frags from aquarists than the large distributers that keep thousands of animals in the same water. That is what quarantine is for. You also have to consider the stess of being removed from the ocean and never being acclimated to aquarium life as a factor. When I trade stuff in it is comprised of rocks with dozens of shrooms or polyps on them, not just individual frags. Aquatic Specialists always took my frags and gave me store credit which I used for a lot of base rock to grow out more softies and mushrooms. Unfortunately they closed shop so I needed to find another LFS. It turned out to not be these guys with their attitude. I do buy from them if they are the only ones that have needed supplies that I cannot get online. I rarely buy livestock since I tend to have a blue thumb and my stuff lives for years. I also try to make purchases wisely and responsibly.

haha... a blue thumb... first time I've heard that one! :) I'll have to remember that.

And I agree... that is what quarantine is for, but whatever tickles their pickle.
