So should I mix Select and Seaflor special, or go all Seaflor? My last tank had a substrate that was more akin to one size larger than Seaflor, and it was too large. I don't want to make the mistake that I go too large again. Its ALOT of sand and having to remove 300 pounds (half) later to remix would be a royal PITA.

I would go bare bottom. At least until tank will be cycled.Even if you getting cured live rock stil a lot crap comes down to the bottom.I would add in couples months or so some live sand

Going BB while curing the rock would also give you a chance to test out a bag each of the sands you are debating. You would then only have to remove a single bag (or none at all in that big tank!) if you dislike it.

FWIW, we went with the CaribSea Special Grade (1-2mm) for our 75g. We only needed 60 pounds for a 1 inch bed. We are still very much "mixed reef" so we haven't had to deal with sandstorms at all, but I am confident we could add quite a bit more flow without blowing any sand around. I will definitely use it again in my next tank.

The tiles in the last photo are 2" square, for reference.

My rock will be dry rock to start with 50 lbs or so to seed. Was thinking of bulk reef supply's eco rox. The main reason is hitchhikers. I don't want to have to quarantine 500 lbs of live rock and look for hitchhikers. The second reason was I could take the time to arrange the rocks the way I wanted out of water. I was then going to put down the sand then fill the tank, reducing the murky sandstorm.

Right now I'm leaning towards the special reef grade. I see a lot of people using it.

You're a patient man if youre gonna wait for 500 lb of rock to cure and get colonized

I was throwin in coral the week after the water went in LOL

I'm in no rush with this tank. I fully realize with something this big I'm going to have to be extremely patient and take my time.

I just read this entire thread and I gotta tell you that this is the most incredible build i have ever seen! This is my dream to do something this big. Keep up the excellent work and keep all of us posted!!!

Beautiful work on the Basement ! cant wait to see this progress. I'm sure you already answered this but I'm a little Lazy this morning. When do you think the actual Tank build will start? :)

I was reading the earliest posts in this thread and I'm really interested in your T-5 lighting system - especially the light rail...have you started on that yet???

Well Its kind of started I'm doing cleanup work right now. I installed the dirst real tank item last friday. The Ventillation system for the tank went in. Two fantec fans, one pulling in from outside, and one pushing to outside are now installed and wired up. The joints and stuff need to be siliconed ect.

The threshold and seal for the bottom of the door out of the fishroom went in. The shower trims for the can lights went in.

The front woodwork on teh fishtank is still not done. I ordered some shaped trim and they delivered the wrong stuff. So I have to wait for the next delivery. All in all though I'm getting close to done and ready for carpet except for some minor fishtank trim work.

I'm proud to report the Kegerator is in, working, and has its first keg installed!

After I get all the equipment out (I'll cut the remaining trim in the Garage) I need to give the whole basement a power vacuum to get all the remaining grit and dust out before the carpet comes in.

I still havent picked out the most of the sconces and lights and bar pendants yet. The wall behind the bar needs a mirror and surround tile, I need to put all the audio trim in, the shower needs a frameless glass wall and door. Pretty much a ton of stuff to do.

After the dust is out though I'll be splitting my time between the fishtank work and the other work :)

...actually that should read "light rack" that you're building...

Nope I havent started on them. I do know they are going to be built out of wood... mostly because I'm comfortable working with it. After I get the design down, I might have someone make them out of aluminum. I'm still kicking around ideas on how they should be done. IU know they will be on two frames. I know I want to be able to raise them, and I'm not sure if I want them to slide out also. I think teh sliding depends on how much room I have left to slide out after the back wall is filled with equipment.

I see you went with the two Fantech fans. Weren't you considering an HRV at one point or am I mistaken?

Also, why two fans and not just one with a passive duct if the room is sealed?

I'm debating whether or not to install a fan for now and see how it works before shelling out the cash for the HRV. We have similar climates so it'll be interesting to compare notes.
