Calcium Reactor Up and Running

Calcium Reactor Up and Running

My man Chris came through and helped me fix the reactor. Apparently there was a small blockage that caused the the leak and once it was free the reactor is working flawless. Thanks again Chris. :celeb1::celeb1::celeb1:

Hi would it be sensible to have an index for these large threads like this? :bounce1: couldn't find the sections on FTS, etc.

The calcium reactor has been running for the.better of 12 hours and no leaks. Current parameters are:

Calcium - 400 ppm
Alkalinity - 7.6 dKh
Magnesium - 1200

And other important parameters se currently:

Nitrates - 5 ppm
Phosphates- .11 ppm
Potassium - 390 ppm
Iron -0 ppm (Still working on bringing that up to a readable level)

I will definitely watch alkalinity as I want it in the 7.5 range for ZeoVit.

Thanks for viewing.

Well day two of the CR running and results are

Calcium 420 ppm
Alkalinity 7.7 dKh
Magnesium 1240 ppm

NOTE: I have been supplementing magnesium to get at the proper readings even though the calcium media states that there is more magnesium in the product. I will test again tomorrow as Sunday is my water change day.

It can take a few days for new calcium reactor media to break down enough to actually start contributing to your water. Take your time with calcium reactors and only make small corrections.

Actually, just the opposite (sorry). Reduce your dosing gradually as the calcium reactor takes over. Measure, measure, measure.

This is one of the problems with calcium reactors. When it runs low on media you have to take the whole works out of production, clean it all out, and add new media which will, in turn, require a few days to come back on line, requiring re-calibrating the calcium reactor all over again.

Once it is back up and running, the calcium reactor will eventually stabilize once more and keep running on its merry way... until next time. You just have to be aware of this transition period.

I would not totally dismiss your dosing system since, fiddly as they are, they provide a good temporary stand-in during servicing periods on your calcium reactor. But on the whole, a calcium reactor is still, to me, the more stable and reliable choice for SPS tanks. The other option is to just permit your water parameters to be a little less than perfect for 4-5 days every time you re-fill the media.

Nothing's as simple as it looks, eh?
