600 Gallon Upgrade Build

Which ones are you looking at? I have 4 bartlett and just purchased 2 Lyretail. I love the pink and yellow on the bartletts. The orange on the Lyretail is a nice contrast.

I am definitely going with the Lyretails and Dispars. I might do the tukas as a store who has a good wholeseller has some with great results.

The chocolate and unicorn tang are so beautiful!

Now i must search around for one of each for me!

stunning tank!

Thanks matt. I also have a purple in my FT that I wont place into my DT until I put in the last tang.

Ok this is late but still disturbing and confused.

Like normal, Friday or Saturday I test my water parameters before I do a water change. I went from weekly water changes to biweekly because my nitrates and phosphates were 0 ppms for a little longer than a month. The past 6-8 weeks since the biweekly water changes the nitrates and phosphates have been averaging +/-1 ppm of nitrates and phosphates have been averaging .05 ppms. During this time the top three have been:

Calcium - 450
Alkalinity - 8.3
Magnesium - 1350(note I manually dose magnesium on occasion to to keep it at this level and I believe I will have to add more neomag to achieve this level.

Fast forward to Saturday, I go to clean the frag tank and notice my red dragon, yellow milli, and unnamed acro dead. I check my nitrates and phosphates and they are where I just mentioned. Next I test my alk and it is 6.65 with the Hanna and 6.7 with salifert. Does anyone know how my alk dropped 2 ppms in a week? All the other acros show some stress but there still is some polyp extension.

Please help me understand thank you for your input.

Obviously some biological process in your tank is releasing a lot of acids. If you aren't testing more often than every two weeks you might want to:

a). raise the Alk back up slowly with bicarbonate of soda
b). maintain your Alk at a higher level (some people go up as far as 11) so as to limit any future drops

Better would be to start measuring and dosing more often or automating the process. Check out this article for making your own dosing solution.

Any change that fast is bound to have bad repercussions. Sorry you're having so many problems, Wayne. I hope you'll persevere.

Wayne did U check your water para soon after the water change. It is possible your salt does not contain as much of the good elements that you dose and as such a water change depending on percent changed can alter you newly established system. Check your water para before the next water change and add ALk/calc to get them close to your tank para. I am a bit lazy so instead of checking I just add my three elements as I am changing the water (Alk Cal Mag) a dab of stronium and a dab of combiSan. Not sure what your system needs but that is what is working well for my corals.

I always check my water parameters weekly and the day before the water change. I even test my makeup water to see where the parameters are too and they were inline. I think that since my ph dropped because it's getting scorching hot in Florida that it might have affected my alk also.

Wayne, I am sorry since my statement was not clear... I meant check the New Water parameters that is to be added to your system and see that they are not lacking compared to what is in your system. If the new water alk is low and you are making a large say like 50% water change then your system can get thrown out of balance. I hope everything else survives... Gradual temp rises in our tank and as long as we stay below 82 or thereabout we should be OK... Rapid temp change and or Temp above 85 can be damaging!!

I understood your statement. I might have explained myself incorrectly to you. After I mix new saltwater I check the parameters to see where they are compared to my tank parameters. If they are low then I dose the water to closely match my tank parameters. I only do 40 gallon water changes every two weeks. I also test my mixed saltwater weekly to see if the parameters change and they basically stay the same as I dosed it previously. It's a mystery with these tanks.

OK Wayne the challenges never stop. You are doing everything perfectly correct. One more question: Could any other coral with long tentacles have stung those that are struggling?

No sir. Only other acros are next to each other and they are a good 3-4 inches away. I think that they are expert corals IMHO. I should've waited.

Sorry about the corals, Wayne. Alk swings are our worst enemy. :angryfire:

And yes, the nicer SPS are less tolerant of alk swings. Don't you just love this hobby?

We've never done the zeovit dosing, so can't speak much to that but is it possible that some of the things you are dosing are impacting the test results and/or the available calcium carbonate ions? Are you adding any acids, like vinegar? Check out this article if you have the appetite to dig into this more!!

I would keep the corals right were they are even if they look dead. Even if the slightest of tissue survives it can recover.
