600 Gallon Upgrade Build

Excited too see the center overflow too. I'm considering this on my next tank
Corey

Here is a pic if that's what you are talking about. Unless you mean something else.

Sweet new tangs! That's funny because I always ask for tangs for my birthday too! :hb2:

I know right. I still want a Dussemier, White Cheek, maybe a Powder Blue, definitely an Achilles, and a unicorn. My problem is I want some type of school of tangs but not the yellows eve though my girl wants one in the tank.

Yellows can actually be quite aggressive in the tank. Convicts are more likely to school (gang up) to raid other tangs' territory in the tank.

I was actually thinking about doing something different like a school of Foxfaces. So no cool tangs to school with? Not even a school of black or purple tangs?

Tangs are normally solitary. They only aggregate for a specific purpose, like a raid or to breed. Since their lifestyle in your tank is so artificial you can't expect them to behave very naturally. There was an article about schooling behaviour and its drivers in Coral Magazine a few issues ago - good reading!

The way I see it, if you're going for a "garden of tangs" effect, just enjoy the colours and watch to see how they choose to interact with each other.

8 of my 10 tangs swim together ALL day long! (Naso, Barienne, Unicorn, Sailfin, 2x Purple, Yellow, Hippo) The other 2 (smaller Kole & Tomeni) stay together, and sometimes join the 'big boys'!

Yes, that's the word I was trying to think of - "shoaling" behaviour versus "schooling" behaviour. Thx, Albano.

Looking good pal! When are we going to see it full of water?

Well my equipment wont be here until Friday(crossed fingers). I am going to do the plumbing in the garage to make sure there are no leaks. While that is going on I will be putting the new flooring down in the room, reconfigure the stand, paint the stand, center it in the room, then have a reef party to move the tank into the house. So in all honesty saltwater wont be in the tank until about October/November barring no emergencies.

I get it. So I will make my choices wisely

That is a cool video and even cooler how they all get along. You have some big Naso species in there. Thank you for the incite.

Again thanks dave.m. There is not enough thank you for the knowledge you have given me and other fellow reefers.

Very nice build. I think that half of the fun is in the build. I would not rush to set-up your system until you have everything that you need to make it complete. I messed up twice before doing that and then redoing it. I would also say that you take your time and get your wiring and piping placed were it needs to be so that it is clean and neat.

I am a huge fan of the Tangs, I have always had at least three in my set-ups. I would agree that as long as you give them enough area to swim and to hide that they should do well together. When I have added Tangs to my systems I have done so in the evening just as the lights have gone out for the night.

I can't wait to see your system up and running.

From one former military man to another, I totally agree. Hopefully everything will be in this weekend so I can take it to the next level. Trust me, I am not going to rush. As I stated in the introduction this was going to be a slow build. The friendly reefers know I am a disabled vet so money is on the low.

I love tangs but it looks like I will have to cut my list down or face the consequence. Thanks again for chiming in.

Aquascaping Challenge

Aquascaping Challenge

As I am looking at a tank only filled with water, I was wondering how high at the highest point should my aquascape be. I am definitely wanting room for the fish to swim and room for the corals to grow out and up.

The height of the center overflow is about 21 inches. Will 15 - 18 inches be the max height I can get away with? Reason being is I am having another sump built and the one i already have can hold approximately 100 - 150 lbs of live rock. That should offset the main tank as I only see about 300 - 350 lbs inside there.

While I am waiting I can build my structures now and have them cure until transfer into the DT.

I would like your input and do you think its a good call/decision or maybe someone has a better idea.

I recently aquascaped my 156 and I left about 10-12" from the top of my rock structures to the overflow height. If you do the same it will allow for lots of growth upwards and still room for the fish to cruise over and around the corals. You can vary the heights a little more since your tank is about 4x bigger, but I think if you build up your rock too high you are going to end up having to tear it out later, especially if you end up with SPS in your tank.

Its definitely going to be at least 75%SPS. I would love it to be 100% but i like motion in the tank.

If you are going heavy with the SPS then leave a good deal of space near the top.

I'd probably have one tower or island that rises up near the surface (cause I like that look) but then throughout the rest of the tank leave yourself more growing room than you think you need, you'll have that space filled in soon enough...
