6000 gallon system - Project.

Curious which sharks are you going to be putting in the tank... And what would you recommend as the minimum tank size for sharks... Black nose sharks... I once had a friend who picked up a shark... had to give it back would swim across the tank and with it would bring a surge of water that would splash water over the edges... and his tank was three and half feet high I beleive... can't really remember the deepth thinking it was also three...

Thanks,
Sagar

James,

In regards to keeping the fake coral clean...I am pretty sure you are aware of Fintastics here in Charlotte. Anyway, they have a large (ok smaller than your proposed largest tank) that houses a 3+ foot shark, some grouper, and tangs. No algae whatsoever. Sand is spotless. Corals are spotless as well. And no snails or crabs in tank. Relatively low light and high flow like your wanting, UV and high skimming. The only problem he seems to have had thus far is training the shark not to eat some of the large tangs.

Which brings me to ask about the shark/eel tank...I have yet to see a large eel tank that is not plagued with hair algae. It would be nice if someone could post a pic or link to one that is clean.

Tanks this size don't fall under Large Reef Tanks.

DON'T EVEN THINK OF BUILDING A TANK LIKE THIS AT HOME!!!!

Well we finished the plumbing today... FINALLY!! There were some significant setbacks and that's just the way it goes when SO much of your project depends on other people.. electricians, plumbers, masoners, etc. .

The pump room now looks like spaghetti junction and getting through it is now a little like a game of limbo :)

I've now received a job offer in a different state going back to my Corporate roots. I'm in the midst of tearing apart my home system and shutting it down for now.. Doing the desk job thing is going to be a big change, but I'm hoping to continue working with John at Seaquariums when I can. I'll post some pictures of the completed pump room soon...

Thanks for following folks!

Yep, you only get so much fun in life, eh?
Can't wait for pics.
Thanks for the ride!

If you mean by fun sweating in 110 degree 98% humidity underground with no air circulation breathing PVC cement and bumping into sharp protruding objects.... yep.

Kidding aside, it was VERY hard work, but a good break from the struggles of TPS reports and e-mail.... :)

Jamesurq--
Is there anyone else from reefcentral working on this with you? Any other web poster anywhere documenting the process? I'd think something this labor-intensive and of this scope should have more press than this. Not that we don't appreciate your efforts, but you shouldn't be alone in this!

Nope - just me and the folks at Seaquariums.

I'll get some more shots soon. Gotta get down there and take a few.

Thanks---show us some long lengths of PVC and monitors and big, ol ugly sumps and stuff!
Maybe some of that dandy decor sittin in them huge empty tanks---
--thanks loads

So as promised, a few shots.

Just as an FYI - we are running 950 GPM through this system (at 100% efficiency)

A look at the pumps on the sump. (4) 1HP RK2 pumps for the main circulation.

Gives you an idea of the size with the 5 gallon bucket to the left.

And here are a few shots of the room:
That's a large sweetwater airpump on that shelf for the bio filter.

They don't have the trim finished on the 2 smaller tanks, they're still wiring up the large waterfall in the entranceway.

YES! that's what I'm talking about-- "both filled with carbon" MAN! there's an expense in itself --- let alone the pumps and O3 generator. Thanks for that-- now let's go get us some SHARKS!

All I can say is "WOW" well planned mechanicals.

Do you think you will want to make taller tank surrounds to block the glare from the lights when the they are on? I know that some people (probably most of them), while sitting for dinner don't want the lights glaring at them. What do think?
