6100 Impeller may have broken - HELP!!!!

Last week when I did a water change I heard an alarm...thought it was the new chiller that I installed, but then it went away. This morning when I fed the fish, as usual I turn off the tunze's...when they came back on, I didn't see water movement from one of side of the tank (I have two tunze's 6100 - one on each end). So I grabbed some Calcium and poured over the tunze that didn't seem to be moving...well I was right. When I went to umplug it the alarm came back on and it was from the transformer. I assumed the alarm I heard before was from the transformer letting me know the pump wasn't working...duh! So, I took the pump out and when I went to pull out the impeller to clean it, the impeller appeard to be stuck. When it came out it looks like it broke (take a look at the pic in my gallery). The end of the impeller appears to have deteriorated and a small red o-ring came out. Do I need a new impeller?? Victor - please help me. Any chance I can get one ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!!!

It just needs to be cleaned- look at the thread at the top of this forum on cleaning, you need to pry the upper bearing off of the magnet and clean it and reassemble it, the part stuck at the bottom is a bearing it is supposed to freely spin on.

Roger, thanks. But if you look at my picture, it appears as if the bottom of the impeller broke or cracked off...does the picture look normal to you?

It is a bit dark but I don't see anything broken, the piece on the bottom of the magnet is a seperate piece, the oring goes underneath it and it sits at the bottom of the hole, your manual also has detail of how all these piece go together.

Thanks again Roger. I have the pump (taken apart) sitting in EZclean solution. I am going to go home for lunch and see if it will work again.

Roger - I cleaned it thoroughly and plugged it back up. However, the alarm is still coming out of the driver and the pump is still not moving...your thoughts? Do I have a bad driver?

WHA?????????????? Please write and post "I will never pour un mixed and/or un needed/tested chemicals into my tank ever again no matter what the "Emergency" and I understand that pouring chemicals into my tank as a method of testing hardware is WRONG" 100 times please, k, thx.

MarineFlake - relax. It was concentrated liquid calcium by Kent Marine, which is what I typically use to dose my tank. Let's just stick to the topic here.

If the driver is alarming usually it is fine. Did you seperate the upper bearing from the magnet? Soaking alone is not going to free the parts, you need to pry it off and then soak and scrub to get all the calcium off. I did send a new drive unit yesterday that you had ordered.

Roger - sorry - not sure what you mean by separating upper bearing from the magnet - ?

Also, I thought Champion was going to order me a new impeller, not a drive unit...in either case, I really don't think I need a new drive unit nor an impeller. Can you cancell that order?

The drive unit is the impeller- it is what you sent me the picture of. Please look at the stickied thread at the top of this forum on cleaning pumps, the upper bearing is stuck to the magnet in the picture you showed me. You should have three pieces- red oring, upper bearing, magnet with propeller.

Cool. I have printed out the pics you posted on the thread and will take it apart. For the mean time, please cancel the order for the "drive unit". Thanks Roger!

I cannot cancel it, I drop shipped it for Champion, you will need to talk to them. It has already shipped. It would be a very good idea to have a spare. I could not imagine not having spares of critical parts like impellers/ drive units for my pumps, you will innevitably need one.
