6100 question

I have a brown version 6100 that was new in box one month ago (it sat in the back of a store's storage room for several years). I cleaned the impeller for the first time on Sunday following the sticky tutorial above.

After re-assembly, the pump is noisy. A loud hum with an occasional slight rev'ing sound. I let it run 24 hrs, took it apart again and re-assembled with no change. Everything seems in order.

ideas?

Pry out the bush bearing (3000.610) and reinsert it rotated 180 degrees. Let it run for a couple weeks.

Roger-

Thanks for the help. I tried this and it has not really helped. I realized it has not been 2 weeks, so I can wait longer if needed but the noise is driving me a little nuts (short trip for me).

I am sensitive to noise and ditched the VT in favor or tunze for this reason.

The surging or rev'ing sound is what concerns me. Any other ideas? perhaps if you explained the possible causes for this it would help.

If you want to send it in I could probably resolve it but without actually seeing it and hearing the noise it is difficult to solve this problem. We haven't made the brown colored pumps since June of 2005 so it is very odd that one would have been in back stock somewhere for so long.

I am not sure why he had the pump so long, but it definitely looked new except a tattered box. I got a good deal. I think I asked about it here and was told the brown ones were as good as the black. I wonder what the point of your 'odd' comment was? DO the brown versions make more noise? Are the newer impeller versions quieter?

At that time the 6100 was usually on backorder with most vendors and perpetually out of stock on our end, it just is very unusual as a result. It is very difficult for me to get warranty coverage from the factory in these instances. German law is written so that the two year warranty is from date of manufacture, the consumer has a two year warranty as well but where the manufacture date and sale date differ the warranty is paid by the reseller. I understand that US law is different but extreme exceptions like this are very difficult for me to argue for coverage on my end. In a case like this in Germany anything that were to happen in the two year warranty period would be the expense of the retailer. The only difference is color indeed but the age of the pump just puts me in a difficult position in terms of proving it is new and should be covered and that the receipt corresponds to this purchase, that was my point.

The newer impeller can be quieter but it depends on the source of the noise. It has fewer parts and reduces the noise of on and off use and intermittent noise issues but some sources of noise can actually be slightly worse. I think the best resolution would be to get the pump in so I can test it and try different parts and basically hand fit parts to reduce the noise.

I understand the warranty issue and that is okay. This is partially why I got a good deal.

I am going to get another one and I'll compare the noise so I know if I am not just crazy. If it truly is more noisy than another 6101 I'll send it in to see what can be done.

Cheers

I came home from work today and the pump was much much quieter. My wife noticed too. I dont understand it but I guess the reef gods are smiling on me today.
