i noticed that the Monticaps have polyps on the underneath side. i have not noticed that on the mother colonies under halides.

Jonathan- you the man. that's it for sure. came on the rock that had been in the holding tank for months and then it sprang forth in the new tank.

i have it in a couple of places. interesting.

My Monti Cap's have polyps on the underside...I run MH, but I wouldn't think that would make a difference. My red monti has a pale bottomside, and the polyps on the bottom are more apparent than the polyps on the top.

Those look like some sort of anemone next to the valonia...I would destroy them ASAP...not worth the risk to get aptaisa or majano in there (though they don't really look like either). I've seen some pest hydroids that looked similiar to those as well!

Next to the Valonia are hydroids. In the bottom pic there is not enough contrast to tell but there might be one aiptasia on the left edge. Otherwise just algal matter.

i think what looks like an aiptasia is only algae. i just looked at that area ver closely and don't see any aiptasia. could be though as i have them in the tank these frags came from.

that was weeks ago and i looked them over very closely before putting them in the new tank.

I don't have a chiller. I allow my tank to swing between 76.5 and 83F. The only real problem is if you have temperate animals in your tank like Mexican Turbos. These don't do so well at teh higher temps. and can die off if they are subjected to too many days above 81F IME.

The other issue with captive reefs is oxygen levels. As the temp. increases, the O2 level lowers. SO for a system like mine, a good supply of constant fresh air is required.

My concern about your system is hot spots generated by the reflective "tube" from the sky-light. That thing may be concentrating heat in one area for too long and sort of magnifying it perhaps.

it is less than direct sun as it is diminished by the reflections. there are some cool glitter lines though. and it moves along with the sun so any one area is only for a while.

no FTS. working on the infrastructure.

i haven't cleaned the viewing pane in a week. it has got a good coating of algae, with other things growing in it. you can see very small tube worms, there are very small pods, and then the other things in the photo.

some kind of flat worm, looks like Planaria in the photo but in person they don't look red or green at all, just a kind of dark brown/grey.

they don't seem to be on any of the corals, they are on the sand bed .
the corals all seem fine.

what is it and what do i do about it?
flat worms. probably hundreds of them. what if anything should i do? what will eat them, biological control.

the other translucent thing is about 1/4" in diameter and has things growing inside i think. it was suggested by a friend that it is snails. there are some 1/2" snails in the tank. i don't know what else it could be. the only other things in the tank are two Diadema urchins and a lawnmower Blenny that hang at at that end of the tank.

the other question is what if anything to add for more algae control?
most of the algae appears dead but still in place, you can see both forms below.

Looks to be red planaria. They aren't harmful to anything and usually disappears on there own. As for the translucent thing, it looks to be some sort of eggs from snails or something.

As for the hair algae, there are several things that will eat them. Listed in order of what worked best for me in my experience.

Foxface
Scribbled rabbit fish
Tangs
seahare

Mark, i forgot to show you the blue tip Acro that is blue tipped again. the Yongei is definitely growing also.
