thanks, Marc i PM'd the above offerer about his offer to help build doors and offered to pay for L&M and never heard back from him.

i have attached a small piece of velcro to each blind and i can roll each up and hold it tight against the top of the opening.

i met a cabinet maker the other night at a neighborhood party. he told me would like a small project until i told him what i wanted. he declined. he said the high humidity would soon cause the doors to warp and quit working and i would be mad at him.

i think he is wrong although i have not seen accordion type doors on aquarium hoods.

Why not write a contract that relieves him of responsability from warpage?

A couple coats of Spar should seal them.

that, and using a non-ferrous hinge. i agree w/ salty joe. if you coat the doors well with any waterproofing sealant, they will be just fine up there.

that is cool but not what i can do. my idea is a bifold or trifold door set of six panels to all slide to one side allowing full access to the top of the tank with the doors open. they would be shaker style like the rest of the doors in the house or just plain and painted glossy white like the other doors.

i like the idea of non-ferrous metal for the hinges. we have boat places neat me that i could probably get hinges at. the track hardware is stainless i think.

i have had areas of coral disappear and found this snail on the coral.

IMG_7026.jpg

that was about a week ago.
i got up about 4am this morning and looked in the tank with the flashlight and magnifying glass like i like to do. i saw the snail again. i have been seeing more tissue disappearing every other day or so, another 1/2-3/4". i have seen the snail under the branch during the day where i could not get to it.

the part where it was this morning is now bare skeleton.

interestingly enough there are still polyps in the coralites, at least for the moment. on the older grazed part the have disappeared.

here are some pictures of the snail. i have removed it from the tank. i hope it didn't have babies.

what do you think? is it the coral eater?

It looks like a Nassarius Snail... but then again I could be wrong, if that is case it cleaned my sandbed, but this guy is cleaning out your coral... Strange

Nassarius is a type of whelk but they dont typically eat corals... It definitely looks like some type of a whelk though. I have been wanting to build a algae scrubber for a while now but have never had the space. Great job on the tank and the sumps are awesome!

thanks-

i have lots of Nassarius in the sandbed but it is not one of those.

i got an id on it from this thread.

algae scrubber is ready to be cleaned again today.

PO4 still 0.70 yesterday.

two years ago this week we started demolition of the old house.

one year ago this week i was doing the fresh water test of the plumbing while the house was being built around the tank.

maybe in another year i will have PO4 under control and things will really be growing.

this week i emptied the 400 gallon container on the patio of it's LR. it all went into the garage, some in the main sumps and some in one of the glass tanks. at one time this tank has many hundreds of Aiptasia. back in april i added about 10 Berghia. when i emptied the tank i could not find one aiptasia or berghia. i had seen a berghia just a couple of weeks ago too. i need a few berghia for the main system as there are a few aiptasia in the main system, arghhh!

this tank had no fish, no skimmer, and sat in the sun on my patio.
just a heater and a mag24.

i have the last bit of rock to remove today and then i can save some more electricity.

there are a few mojanos on the rock though. so for now this rock is isolated until i can remove the rocks with the mojanos.

i hope the aiptasia really is gone from these rocks. i was shocked to find not a single aiptasia or berghia. i hope there were/are some berghia hiding in the rocks. the whole surface of the barrel was covered with aiptasia.

on another note the solar system made 30 Kilowatts yesterday. not enough to power everything.

i still have one more tank to take down. a 55 gallon with two pumps and a 250 watt light. it has some corals in it and hasn't had any fish for several weeks.

Surprising that the P04 hasn't dropped now that the scrubber is functional. Do you have much algae growth in the tank serving as a reservoir? I've had my tank up with a scrubber since day one and never measured P04 but I likely have some b/c I have hair algae and cyano in my display. I just received a P04 reactor to see if it helps with the tank algae (and hopefully not impede the scrubber too much).

What is your feeding regimen?

Matt

i had to work all day at my real job so nothing got done on the tank. hopefully tomorrow.

the scrubber needs to be cleaned so that could be inhibiting it's working. i am not happy with the water flow over it either. it is starting to grow quickly between cleanings so that is cool.

the screen is not all covered with water or algae.

i will take pictures of the amount of food i feed daily and post soon along with the fish list. not that many fish for 1700 gallons. i least i don't think so. others do though but all her fish are stunted and anorexic looking.

Carl,

Sorry I didn't respond to the E-mail, I have been swamped working nights and trying to find time to sleep as well. The offer still stands it just may take me some time to build these. I will PM you my number and we can go from there.

Jason

Glad you got the culprit out of there. Seems likely that it's guilty and if growth returns, then that should be the proof you need.

it will be interesting to see if any more gets eaten. i hate that it is your coral.

all the new ones are expanding and are looking good.

tomorrow i will be putting the cup coral in the display among other tasks.

Carl

some creature of the night sheared off part of this coral. what could it be? Diadema?

i put a couple new corals in the tank.

i have read high nitrates causing birdsnest corals to become "stunted".

i think it may be from high PO4 not nitrates, at least in my system.

my nitrates have never been over 6ppm and was 2.5 yesterday.

PO4 however has always been a problem and has stayed high, currently it is 0.52-0.72 depending on water changes.

here are a couple of pictures. the first one is 3-4 weeks after getting the coral and the tips are already getting rounded.

here it is again a few months later, still growing but with a different form.
IMG_7183.jpg

and finally a new piece that has only been in the tank for a week before i took this picture and already losing the sharp points.

or maybe it is just the flow.

No, I agree with you. The higher PO4 and NO3 will affect the tips. Since your NO3 is lower, I would expect when your PO4 drops, you'll see resumed growth at the tips.

I know you want the system to pull out the PO4 naturally, but if it was me, I'd just do it chemically. Once the bulk of it is out of the system, your filtration should be able to keep it down more easily.
