700 gallon tank, or how i spent my daughters inheritance

WOW, i must have missed all those updates....

the garage looks very clean now. and the tank is stunning.

are you taking the new outdoor sunlight system with you, or is it a bonus with the new house buyer.

i don't think you missed any updates. there is only a little posted above.

thanks for the compliments. the tank is looking pretty good, at least the anemones and fish do. not many corals.

the outdoor system is at our office. it is half of the garage tanks. so it can stay there until we are settled in a new house. it has two of the bins with live rtock and the 250 gallon glass tank with a DSB. it gets sun until about 1pm, after that it is shaded by the adjacent building. they were in this system for several months while the DT was empty. it should be ready for fish, etc. whenever i have to move them.

hopefully the house is sold and i will have to empty it in the next couple of weeks and take all rock, sand, fish, etc to the office tank. the new owners are not interested in fish or the tank. they just want it gone so they can put an elevator where the tank is.

i am trying to sell the tank. i have had some interest but no buyer yet. if not it goes to the new house which would not be a bad thing. smaller house, reef system to be determined but i have some ideas about how to do it better the next and final time.

Great setups and Nice koi pond I have a 10,000 one with about 12 huge koi(12"-30") and about 6 huge fat 10" goldfish=)

it is sad that the buyers won't appreciate the tank or the koi pond. they will at least enjoy the pool but there is no comparison a pool to a koi pond. the fish used it every day, rain or shine.

Wow I have followed this from the start and it was your tank that made my girl let me plan a central tank in our house. Good luck on your new tank and new house.

thank you very much. i am glad i could help. that makes me feel good. sometimes i think no one reads my posts because not many post back but i know folks are so thanks.

we hope the house is sold. not there yet. it will be a new adventure for sure. we are actively looking for the next place. we will be very sad to leave this house we built behind and the property i grew up on too. my father build the old house in 1952. the year i was born.

this property is where i lived until i went off to college. this is where i lost my virginity. this is where my daughter was conceived. this is where my folks died. however, i still have the memories and we will be much happier with a smaller house that we can afford.

it is too bad that those steel beams under the tank will be superfluous. also they probably won't need 5 20 amp circuits in the garage. that elevator will have ample power though.

we had fun building the house and learned a lot. i will do some things differently for the next house and tank.

If you decide to build again, i hope you are as detailed with the new build as you were here. (as well as explain the reasoning's behind the changes or what you do different then this build.....)

i guess you can share a picture after the tank is missing and there is just a huge hole..... (so sad)

Wow. I have read this thread from beginning to end. Not every single post, but it still took me the better part of 5 days to read it. That tank is amazing. That would be my dream tank. I can't believe you are going to sell the house and start over. This thread is what is causing me to start my own reef tank. At 20 gallons total, it will be a fraction of yours, but still, seeing your tank from beginning to end has made me want to do one. I can't wait to see what you do next and I will definitely be subscribing to this thread even though you are taking this tank down. I am sure I will be facing some of the problems you had, albeit on a much smaller scale, and this is a great resource to the beginning aquarist. Thank you for an amazing build and your detail in your posts. I look forward to seeing your next build and hope all goes well with the sale, the purchase of a new house, the move, and last but not least, your next reef.

i tried to look at every page to see what it looks like when it got finished, but can't find it. :(

no reef tank is ever finished. it looks pretty good now with the anemone island. (see recent pix and video)

it had the most corals about 1 1/2 years ago i think. and then the mysterius deaths started. Eric Borneman, Sanjay Yoshi, Joe Yaiullo, Marc Levenson, Steve Gerrett and others all looked at and talked about what could be the problem but we never really figured out what it was. so i have not added any corals in a long time.

i am trying to sell the tank but if i don't i will move it to the next house. maybe it will become the sump for the next tank. i would have to add a few baffles.

it was/is my dream tank too. or is it nightmare? only occasionally! it has brought me a lot of pleasure. i hope the next iteration is much more successful.

i don't know if i want the credit for creating another reef addict but thank you. guys bring their wives/girlfiends over to show them that THEY really aren't crazy.

not if, when i build again i will post a few pix. i will of course take some photos of the tank moving.

the livestock will go into the other tanks now set up at the office.

i won't have the skimmer set up on that system. i better get some chaeto from my friend Mark to at least have some export. i will keep the chaeto in the full sun, at least for the hours the tank is in the sun. the corals will be shaded with blue shadecloth.

one day i will talk about what i want to do differently next time. but of course that is partly determined by what house we get.

Carl

Your house renovation, solar system, koi pond, and reef were all very, very inspirational to me.

Best wishes!

Don't worry, you did not create another one. Your tank just brought it out in me. I was already addicted to fish keeping with 7 freshwater tanks. I have brought that number down, but was on the fence about doing a saltwater or freshwater planted in the 20 gallon I have. I told my fiancee yesterday that I was doing saltwater, and she said "It is about time. Can we get a Green Mandarine?" so I think I am safe there. I look forward to all your future posts concerning this monster tank and can not wait to see what you do next.

Can't wait for the next build...Carl
I guess no more scatches to worry about and no more close loop
Maybe this time around you can grow some colored sticks too!Lol

i haven't sold the tank yet so i will likely be taking it with me, no new tank, or maybe i will make it the sump. Tom hasn't called me back yet. i did talk to him.

definitely no closed loops. we shall see about the colored sticks. a friend gave me a few frags and they aren't doing well. mostly bleached out.

maybe i will just have fish, anemone's and the few corals i have. no colored sticks.

Hopefully tom call you back
But your 700 is almost new so it's ok to keep it.IMO
Also I can have good success with colored stick but no luck with fishes :(

Maybe use a doser instead of calcium and kalk reactor
I have never seen my SPS grow so much ever since I switch!
So I am thinking of getting another 8 footer but not as deep!
As my FO tank side by side maybe a inwall too but not see through:)
