-Is there any catch here or will something like this work reasonably well?

-Would anything else be needed? (other than reflectors/something to mount on)

You would need a reflector, something to mount that on, and some protective UV glass because it isn't single ended.

I have to find the UV glass. Also I am worried about the color as I love what the blue actinics do for me now. I don't want to lose that, but i'm not sure I have room for both.

Yes I have it on a 20g long nano. I love it!!! All corals are growing well. Even have a digitata growing nicely under it. But you do need a reflector and a protective glass.
I was going to add some actinic to the set-up too...

But now I am going to switch over to a fixture but only because it is 150w MH fixture that cost over $400 and I can get it for $200 (used but in good condition)

I would suggest trying illuming's website. Comes with a reflector and uv glass, bulb, ballast for 140. I've dealt with him several times and the service is great.

Great light for nanos, I have one on a 7 gallon. However, I don't like the mix of a 10K with actinics, it's just not the best look in my opinion. I recently went from the 10K to a 13K and I love how it looks with an actinic.

i think you will have more then enough room in your set-up. mount the antinic on the front panel.

i always use 14k bulbs. just like the color . i don't running the antinics during the day only 1 hour b4 MH and 1 hour after before the moons come on.

Another option is to piece it out and get a ballast, bulb (my preference is an Astra Lux 14000K) and a 500W halogen fixture ($10 almost anywhere) which you can retro the metal halide into. Works like a charm.

Will I ever really want more light than a 70w MH on a 10G?

A ballast with a higher wattage rating should have no problem running a lower watt bulb?

That seems really spendy. Is that normal for 70 watt systems? I just bought a 250w EVC e-ballast + reflector + 14k Hamilton se bulb for around $180 + shipping. $140 not including a reflector or power cord for 70 watts?

I think 70 W systems, or the bulbs at least are sometimes more expensive than higher wattage. I'm finding like 400 W ballasts for hydroponic plants for just over $100 CAD.
