I have an internal Mag 7 pump.... hmmm the whole thing as a fuge? Is a 20 gallon sump enough?
I think a 20g would be fine for a sump... basically all you are doing is skimming the water, and hiding equipment. As long as you have enough volume that evaporation shouldn't become an issue, (I highly doubt you'll evaporate 10 gallons a day), then I think you would be fine.

I like that idea.... is that using ball valves where the blue lines are? Both of my tanks are tempered..... but what about the sides.... isn't it only the bottom of the tanks that are tempered to withstand the weight of rocks etc...?

If that's the case... I could do that setup I think which would be more beneficial to the tanks health in the long term IMO.
Yes ball valves would be the gray boxes with blue lines, although there should also be one on the return line.

I believe only the bottoms of tanks are tempered, however you will want to check with the manufacturer to be certain.

I believe someone on RC has posted a list of various tank manufactures which included the tank models and breakout of which panes were safe to drill.

I just looked up "Perfecto" b/c that was the maker... and they were acquired by Marineland in 1999. I went to the site for glass tanks specs and the 55 gallon is the only glass tank that has tempered panels on ALL sides.... uggg

wow that stinks

Oh well. I will still make the fuge as large as possible in the 55 so I'm not too worried. I can always use the 20 gal for a propogation tank or a 2nd culture of pods, or even another hospital tank.

By the way, how do you clean out a tank? For all intensive purposes, let's say I have used copper meds for freshwater fish in that tank.

Could someone also tell me how to quiet the vibration of the return pump on the sump floor? I know you can put something under it but I forget what it was.

Thanks

a mousepad

a mousepad

Are you sure a mousepad is chemically inert? I have a few laying around which would work nice.

Would it rot away in the water after some time?

I made a pad out of silicone, because I wondered about the same thing.

Have any pics? I may use your idea.

Dude, I have not a clue. I got the idea from one of the guys at wetwebmedia.com.

Ah ok. Well they are a reputable bunch. Do you have the link by chance to where they talk about it?

Regards,

I just realized you are talking about using this INTERNALLY. The recommendation was given to me to help silence an EXTERNAL return. I would definitely make one out of silicone or something else known to be safe, sorry for the confusion!

Ah so you covered the whole thing with silicone.. I thought you meant placing the crate on 4 pads of silicone.

How much did it reduce the noise for you? Nice idea with the curved lip so it doesn't vibrate off the sides.

Oh by the way, I went to Home Depot looking for eggcrate and they were all out of the white plastic one. They had a shiny looking metal one, although it felt plastic to me. What do you think about it?

I am wondering, does the crate need to fit snug side to side on the inside bottom of the tank or can it be in pieces. I doubt it would slide around much with rocks and sand on it huh?

Also what about cutting it with scissors... would the sharp edges of the cut affect any sand sifting snails?

Some more pictures of progression.... could someone also help me out with my question on eggcrate? See above post.

Don't worry about the panels being different.... once stained or painted it will all look the same ;) They are 1/4" mahogany fyi.
