75 Gallon Pictures & Build Thread

Well didn't take you long to upgrade! You now have to either start a new thread or change the name of this one :D

One suggestion... get a Reef Ready tank... or have it drilled. Those HOB overflows are unreliable.

It's a lifereef... I'm not too worried :)

I would be tempted to turn the 55g tank into a large fuge, and use the 20g tank as a sump.

Also, are you going to run an internal or external return pump?

I have an internal Mag 7 pump.... hmmm the whole thing as a fuge? Is a 20 gallon sump enough?

I like the idea of having a big refugium.... I also like the idea of having a big return area.... I was going to use a baffle about 6 inches tall and use the rest with eggcrate.... that way my refugium and return area would be one compartment except when the water level hit the baffle.

Is there a way I can make the 20 gallon a second refugium and tie it into the sump/return area? Pics or ideas?

I just drew this up real quick, but have you thought about something along these lines? This is very similiar to what Capn runs on his system.

I like that idea.... is that using ball valves where the blue lines are? Both of my tanks are tempered..... but what about the sides.... isn't it only the bottom of the tanks that are tempered to withstand the weight of rocks etc...?

If that's the case... I could do that setup I think which would be more beneficial to the tanks health in the long term IMO.

Urgent help!

I need to know if the sides of a 55 gallon tank are drillable or not and what do you drill with... a hole saw? There is a sticker that says Do not Drill... but that is on the bottom.

If I can drill it.... then I will use the entire 55 gallon as a fuge like TSwifty suggested. Need to know tonight because building crew is coming tomorrow to finish stand and things... so I would have to tell them about my new plan.

I'm pretty sure my 55 gallon tank that I bought almost a year ago started with a "P" for a manufacturer.... Penn-Plax? Do they make tanks?

Ok I thought of a plan that doesn't require customizations to the building of the fish room. Here is my plan.... and will work even if the tanks are not drillable because I will still have one in function.

What do you think?

PROBLEM......

I have no idea who made the 20 gallon.... I got that at Wal Mart years ago... and I am pretty sure the 55 gallon is a Perfecto... purchased in Sept 07... no idea when it was made.... if the sides are tempered and I try to drill........ I'm out a good deal of cash on them :(

Image is from back of tank. Orange color is a connection between the two tanks beneath stand.

Cool stuff capn....

Does anyone have the contact information for Perfecto Aquariums? I am not getting any results and Marineland keeps showing up.... is Marineland the real maker of Perfecto tanks?? If so, I can't drill the 55 because it's tempered on all 4's.

Also wondering how you cut eggcrate with a nice smooth edge like I see in pics on top of tanks... when I cut mine with scissors it looked....... awful.

I borrowed a laser from James Bond:D

seriously and plastic like that I use a skill saw but make sure the piece can move or vibrate

If you really want a workout use heavy duty wire cutters and cut each individual piece. That way does work, but i imagine a table saw would be the best way to do it, or a band saw. In absence of either one of those, a skill saw would work.

Would a hand saw work?

I would think it would crack and split the plastic because it is not a fast quick cut like a skill saw.

Hmmm my local fish store wanted $10 per 1 pound of rock... what a joke. The only reputable price I see online for Canada is $4.19/lb but then I have to pay for shipping.

I am planning to have about 200 lbs of rock in my 125 display and 15-20 fuge.

Could someone tell me the benefits of Vanutu and Tonga rock? The primary rock will be Fiji obviously, but I would like unique structures for bridges etc... I want a good aquascape.. not just rocks piled ontop of each other.

Well I got the test kits ready... also have a couple spare ones coming from Salifert. Will be interesting to compare the results between the two.

Simple sponge filter and tubing too, in order to prepare for the QT tank.
