75 Gallon Pictures & Build Thread

Picture time.. picture time.

I cut up the eggcrate to fit... 3 pieces in there as of now... with pure RO/DI water and a bit of salt from the storage container I had seawater sitting in. Still working on finding a good way of figuring out how much salt I need... I have a 45-50 gallon long rubbermaid bin and it fills up about 70%... I'm going to have to put salt in a rubber bin with a line to measure... so I don't count cup after cup of salt.

Anyways here is the wall and trim stained with the tank!

Beauty of a setup! Is that the background you intend to use? I personally like black or blue backgrounds and let our reefs display the coral.

Thanks Tim. Well for now anyways I plan to use that background. It adds some color at least. I also have a blue background and a black one. Can change at anytime... I like the blue one too myself... that and this one.

True! I forget you have such easy access to the back of the tank and can change it at will. :) Use whatever makes you happy! I love just sitting down during dinner and watching the tank. My favorite time of the day.

Yes it will be good. I'm itching to get the sand in there! I got bahamas oolite oolitic and it looks a little less white than what I envisioned... perhaps it will turn whiter once in the water. I still am waiting on some epoxy to finish off my sump.. then I have to organize my fish room because it's haywire right now.

I also have 50 pounds of dry fiji rock coming on this friday hopefully... along with 15 pounds of fiji rubble rock that i can play around with,, use in the sump to help break up bubbles at the entrance point... and make wild shapes for the display tank.

your pictures confused me for a second!

I thought all the corals and rocks were from your actual tank. :)

I had to double check and re-read the post lol

Well filling up the tank today and going to get salinity close to where I want it, then add just enough sand to be firm packed over the eggcrate.... rocks will go on that then the rest of the sand later... more pictures soon.

Picture time!

I got the water to 1.024 (i'm having trouble finding an easy way to match how much salt compared to the amount in my rubbermaid bin)

and then added enough sand to hold the eggcrate in place. Tomorrow when it settles down I'll smooth it out flat and firm to make way for the rock base.

Don't mind the heater near the front pane lol... just in there until my sump is finished to test out the heating.

Very impressive.

Are you going to place the rock directly onto the egg crate or on top of the sand? I ask because any sand sifting critters may upset the rock if it’s sitting on the sand. I’m sure this is something you’ve already addressed though so please don’t take offense at the question.

No offense taken :) I thought of that but also thought of the fact that I don't want any eggcrate showing after I put rocks down and then sand (trying to work the sand under hard to fit places), so I am only putting enough sand to make a firm flat base just 1mm over the eggcrate.

So yes the rocks will sit on the crate but also on the sand.. if that makes sense :) Then after I aquascape, I will put in the rest of the sand.

I got 50 pounds of dry fiji rock from bulkreefsupply and will probably order another 50 pounds along with 25 pounds of live rock to seed it all.

How long does it take for the sand to clear up? Should I have any problems smoothing it out once it has settled?

If you rinsed it out well, then it should clear up by tomorrow. Smoothing it out should only kick up a little, if pre rinsed.

Ah ok... well I didn't rinse... pre-packaged Caribsea.. said it didn't need to be rinsed... I know some people do though.

I didn't rinse my carib sea direct or whatever it was called. Took about 24hrs to clear up. It stinks for a few weeks though, because everytime you move something it's a crazy sandstorm in the tank and you can't see anything.
