75 Gallon Pictures & Build Thread

Then you don't want to rinse it and it should clear up soon. My understanding is that you only rinse "dead" sand, the live sand doesn't need rinsing.

Well it was so-so this morning but then I smoothed it out over the eggcrate to make way for the rocks... the water is still murky and looks as if the tiniest of sand particles are suspended in mid-water without moving.

I turned off my powerheads and my sump isn't finished yet, could this be part of the issue? Will having the water flow through the sump help clear up the water? Should I turn on the protein skimmer during the cycle and also to help clear things up? I don't see much point in a water change as of yet, since I still have more sand bags to put in later after the aquascaping.

I turned my sump on and added a filter sock to help remove the floating particles.

A sponge filter or HOB filter would help do the same thing.

Yep, it takes a bit but keep the power heads on. It will help identify if there is an issue with the powerhead mixing up the sand.

I don't have to use the sponge filter or HOB all the time right?? Just at the beginning... also... can I use a sponge filter that I planned to use for my QT?

Yep. Shouldn't need it all the time. Mainly because it traps stuff and decomposes. You would want your skimmer to pull that stuff out and when you change water to pull it out. If you use that sponge then you will help seed it with bacteria.

Of course not... It would just help pull out any floating particles, and clear up the tank faster.

Yes you could use that sponge filter.

A lot of people run sponge filters in their sump for a few days or weeks before transfering it to the QT tank so bacteria can build up on it first.

Thanks fellas. I'll throw in the sponge filter near the bottom of the tank and then keep er' in the sump when not in use in the QT. Any nitrate buildup it produces would be minimal compared to the amount of chaeto/fuge plants I plan to keep.

RC saves the day again!

Here's a quick video of the sponge filter in action along with surface agitation (minus the return line, sump isn't done). Let me know what you think.

Looks good, your return line will also help depending upon how you position it.

I would not recommend you doing that--they become nitrate importers very quickly
You only need to run the hob three days prior to setting up the qt anyways to seed it with bacteria.

Ah ok. Sounds good.

Well I"m planning to go to the Oakville Reef Gallery and see what there store is like. I called and they said they carry Indo Live Rock as it is porous and lighter than Fiji.

Is this rock just as good as Fiji?

? Dunno. I imagine it would do fine. My understanding is that is just need be a rock LOL. Aerobic bacteria will seed in areas of oxygen and anaerobic bacteria under that. I'm sure someone else could explain better. Visual appearance and demand were the things I attributed to higher rock prices.

I assume you live somewhere between Oakville/Toronto area. I suspect the rock there is similar to what we get here in Ottawa, given there are only so many wholesalers to Canada.

I just put 200lbs of Indo in my tanks. i am very pleased with it. The stuff I got has a few different coraline colors and is quite porous. I don't think you will go wrong using Indo.

I have used fiji in the past and I like the Indo better. I have been told that the fiji we are getting now is not nearly as good as it used to be. My lfs stopped bringing it in and went to Indo instead.

That makes sense... I like the look of Indo rock. Did a google image search.
