75 gallon tank mh

I have been advised in the past although I cant find the thread to go with 2 250watt mh bulbs on my 75 gallon tank. Since I have done more research and looked into other tanks seeing 2 175's? I am curious as to what would really be ideal? Pricing seems to be almost identical so I guess I am not sure what to go with.

Any recommendations on electronic ballasts and bulbs?
I cant afford top end equipment but I would think a middle of the road would be good.

Actually, some of the best setups are mid-priced. the most expensive units are usually full fixtures and combos where you are really paying more just because its all together and looks pretty.

For a 75g, if you want halide only...

2x lumenarc DE reflectors... $129 ea. perhaps the best you can buy. @reefexotics.com

2x EVC 20,000K 250wattDE (one of many bulbs you can pick) $65 ea. @ oceanencounter.com

2x PFO 250wattHQI ballasts... $130 ea... premium, reefgeek, hellolights, depot... they all sell it for about the same.

So thats $260 in reflectors, $130 in bulbs, and $260 in ballasts. This is a premium output system for $650. Thats pretty cheap for what you are getting.

very interesting, and definatly cheap compared to some systems but with the money I am looking at pumps and other things I was shooting around the 3-400 range but maybe that is going to small I will have to keep doing research on it.

I have 2 power compacts currently on the tank but wanted to switch to metal halides so I am hoping I can tear those down and run actinics in them. That will save me a little I hope.

You are recommending the 250w over the 175w then though?

cant you buy a dual ballast instead of 2 single ones?

That really does sound like a great setup I will have to look into it more.

If your looking to save a few bucks on the reflectors head on over to www.hellolights.com and under the DIY link they have some nice 250 watt HQI reflectors for around $30. The uv glass and brackets for the bulbs are included to.
This is for a retrofit setup so you'll be doing the wiring yourself, but after building that stand some basic wiring should be a breeze for ya.

Okay... you will save $100 per reflector, but you will also see a huge drop in output. Not that Im being critical, but in this case, you are comparing the best reflector out there to perhaps the worst (at least a lesser one).

As for cheaper... dont see how... not for a dual HQI system. The M80 ballasts are what they are. Sure, you might save $30 or soemthing on a dual M80 ballast, but thats about it. I have already listed the bargain basement price for a bulb as well. The only ways to go cheaper are with SE bulbs and non-HQI ballasts... but I really wouldnt do that if I were you. DE/HQI bulbs are the way to go... longer life, higher efficiency, better color stability, etc.

A T5 system would be cheaper, an FWIW, less wattage with more light (more useful light due to the spread). A 6x54watt powermodul system by ATI is $719, but thats the upper extreme... most other alternatives can be had for a fraction of that. A 6x54wattT5 retrofit for example a Tek retrofit from reefgeek is $449 with the bulbs. Its only 324 watts, but closer to the water, and more even output than the halide... you can easily get the same light levels in the T5 tank as a halide one. I used to favor halide only systems, but no more. The best is a Mh+T5 combo, but on smaller tanks than 100g, its just too expensive or cramped to run an effective combo system... so 6x54wattT5 is what i would suggest for a 75g. The advantage is that you can mix and match bulbs to tweak the color to be just how you want it... with halides... you have to pick a bulb and thats all you get.

Hey man I was trying to give the guy some options. I wasnt looking to get schooled in the art of reflectors.
He said he's trying to do a budget build, I was just pointing out that he could shave a little off the price if he went with a lower quality reflector.

Thanks for the info guys, thats the stuff I am looking was only hoping to keep it cheaper then that. No doubt it will be a killer setup if I can pull it off.

I lied sorry guys looking for more wisdom.

What is the difference (aside from namebrand) between the ballast's you mention and the cheaper ones say ebay. I know I want electronic as I have dealt with coil core before but am curious how a setup with those bulbs and reflectors, or maybe something similar and a cheap electronic ballast from ebay. I know you get what you paid for in most cases but I would guess that the cheap ballast is better then a coil core and with it being electronic aside from name brand or warranty maybe what other difference their could be.

From an elctronic standpoint its getting the same watts right? I guess I am asking to be schooled lol... But would appreciate all the wisdom you guys can share. I have skimped before and been unhappy so as I said in the begining of this post I want to find a median, but be on the right side. If your first response is really the best solution for me then so be it but I would like some more information before I spend that kind of money.

I wouldn't buy a cheap ballast from ebay, your asking for trouble. An Icecap or PFO ballast will provide years of dependable service with a company that will stand behind their product. You do get what you pay for and sometimes its smart to just pony up and get the right equipment.

I dont know rules about linking around here but if its ok what about this from hello lights? it isnt name brand but seems like it would work http://www.hellolights.com/aroelba.html

maybe taking a chance on something not proven but technically it should be the same shouldnt it?

I am just trying to find out what my alternatives are. After I buy it does no good to ask the questions I am thinking now ;)

The only way your gonna go cheaper than hellolights is if you buy from aquatraders. They use the same cheap ebay ballast/bulbs/wiring but package it in a slick coralife knockoff package.
I just setup a 75g RR AGA just like you and have been scouring the internet just like you for the best deal on a budget. So far a hellolights retrofit kit is the best deal I can find without going well.....to cheap.

Edit: I should add that buying used is another option, but you never know what you gonna get.

That looks nice. So from my researching it looks like I can get a dual mh ballast for alot cheaper then the HQI ballast. So I guess now I just need to find out how much of a difference there is between the 2

Ok so I think I am looking at hahnmeister's recommended setup earlier in this thread but I am curious on a few other things. If I do the 20000 I would not need the actinic bulbs (I already own 2 pc's each with 4 65w bulbs in them). However most setups I have seen have a different color bulb with the actinics and alternate on off times. With this in mind I was hoping hahnmeister might add a few more comments since he seems really knowledgable in the lighting aspect of tanks.

I may go with cheaper reflectors for the time being because I want to try and do a closed loop also and I am far from rich unfortunatly or I would have a much much bigger tank ;)

ok well I found 2 250 watt icecap ballasts for 230 shipped and I think I am going to go with that. They are offering free shipping though so I want to see what else I need.

Icecap shows they will run hqi bulbs also, has anyone done this. Do they run those as well as they do regular mh or should I just stick to regular mh if I am going to get icecap ballasts? what color temp should I use if I am going to run 4 65w actinic bulbs on a pc?

Thanks
