I have seen a tank here locally that had 2 tunze pumps and a wavebox on his 6ft tank. Didn't seem that the pumps affected the wave action. Awesome movement. I guess the pumps were used to circulate the dead spots.
I'm running 3 mp40es on my 8' long 300 gallon and getting good movement, but need more. Also my corals are all pretty small. I'm think that at least 4 vortechs are needed...maybe more. It's difficult to get good flow in the middle of the tank.
I have 2 on one side and 1 on the other. Each side has 1 pump running in tidal swell. The 3rd pump runs in reef crest mode to get some more random flow. None of the pumps are synced/ani-synced....I like random flow.
Tunze, far better in reliability than Vortech. It will give you years of trouble free service. Vortech is too fragile to me, and always the dry or wetside giving problems, or the controller.

I used to run Vortech's and had reliability issues so switched to Tunze's and have had no problems since.
Recently I gave a Vortech a second go for my frag tank and ended up with service issues. IMO, the Tunze is a bit bulkier but a much more reliable design.
I will say this, both companies have phenomenal customer service.
