i'm guessing I need a 300 gallon or so since they eventually turn into males and kill each other off? if this is the case will 1 be ok on its own?

You should be ok with one. According to Live Aquaria they show min 70 gal. Just remember you need to feed them several times a day.

One will be fine, but I wouldn't try to keep a group in anything smaller than a 180. They can be maintained as a group, but plenty of swimming (and escaping) room is needed to do so.

yeah chromis. i'm still wondering how he's able to keep so many athias if they're so territorial. I love anthias and would love to school them some day..

FWIW, I have a 110gal tank. Among other fish, I have 2 Lyre Tail Anthias and 1 Bartletts Anthias. They all get along great. In fact, the bartletts and the bigger lyretail seem to court each other. I haven't witnessed anything territorial.
